Man tries to rob KC gas station

By ROBERT CRONKELTON

A man wearing black pantyhose tried to rob a Kansas City gas station early this morning by threatening to burn down the place.

A clerk for the BP/Amoco gas station at 8651 Hillcrest Road told police that the man came to the station about 4:30 a.m. and demanded that money, said Kansas City police Capt. Rich Lockhart.

The clerk, who was in a security booth, refused, so the man started spraying a liquid out of a black hose, Lockhart said.

"He further stated that if the clerk didn't give him the money, he would burn down the place," Lockhart said.

The clerk got down on the floor and called police. The suspect left, and the clerk did not see if the man fled on foot or in a car.

Lockhart said nothing was taken because the man couldn't get inside. The clerk was uninjured. Police were unsure what liquid the man had sprayed.

"There was a strong odor of bleach," Lockhart said.
