Warning: Deer on highway

The Kansas Turnpike Authority is putting the word out about deer-car accidents: They're frequent, they're expensive, and they can hurt and even kill you.
How to prevent? Not much you can do if a deer jumps right out at you. At highway speeds, it's usually better to hit the animal rather than swerve if you can't stop.
Deers are nocturnal - watch for them after sunset and, especially, at dawn. KTA spokesman Lisa Callahan shared these hour-by-hour deer-car accident stats from 1996:
