When I see what a talented young programmer like Brett Rickman can accomplish, my first thought is: How can I steal it and take credit for it?
Brett e-mailed me Nov. 4 out of the blue to let me know he had created interactive crime maps from the Overland Park police reports I post daily.
I talked with Brett, a KC resident, this morning and he said he
planned to update his site; this is a volunteer effort. Thanks, Brett!
He says he has started a new job: data-consulting for H&R Block.
Here's part of his his resume:
- 9 years of Information Technology and Technical Support Experience
- Conversant with SQL, Excel, Access, HTML, UNIX , Linux, FreeBSD, VMware, Perl, VBA,
- HTTP, FTP, SSH, SMTP and RSS
- Indepth troubleshooting skills
- Experience with Windows NT and 2000 since version 3.51
- TCP/IP Networking expertise
There are still relatively few online crime maps. The best is probably Chicago. Some police departments have them, including Topeka and Overland Park. Kansas City has static, summary maps; and I don't find any on police Websites for New York or Washington.
