Kansas City kicked off a Safe City Initiative in 2002. Goal: "to make Kansas City one of the safest cities in the nation."
Participants in the initiative - cops and codes enforcers, business owners and block watchers - will meet tomorrow to hear from seven elementary schools about progress since the beginning of the school year.

Some safety issues being addressed:
- Gangs
- Graffiti
- Open-air drug sales near schools
- Sex offenders living in the area
- Seatbelt safety
- Illegal dumping, brush on sidewalks, hinderances to walking to school
- Animal Control
- Abandoned houses
