Man gets 33 years in coke conspiracy

KANSAS   CITY, Mo.

 – Todd P. Graves, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Colombian man was sentenced in federal court today after being convicted at trial of participating in a conspiracy responsible for distributing hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in the Kansas City area.

    Fabio Montano, 35, a citizen of Colombia living in Houston, Texas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner this afternoon to 33 years and nine months in federal prison without parole. Graves noted that the sentence was the highest penalty available under the federal sentencing guidelines.

Police release men questioned in fatal bank robbery

  • Today at about 11:00am two men escorted by Mayor Pro-Tem Alvin Brooks arrived at KCMO Police Headquarters to talk with detectives about several bank robberies that have occurred in recent weeks at the UMB Bank located at 79th and Wornall Road. The bank was also the site of the shooting and subsequent homicide of a security guard.
  • After interviewing both men it was determined that neither is considered a suspect in either the robberies or the homicide at the bank. Both men were allowed to leave headquarters pending further investigation. Detectives are still asking anyone with information into the bank robberies and homicide to call the TIPS Hotline at 474-TIPS (8477).
  • The homicide was #14 for 2006 in Kansas City.

Driver Killed along Missouri 7 Identified

The driver killed in the one vehicle crash on Missouri 7 Highway at Argo Road earlier today has been identified as Jaccob L. Lewis, age 29, a resident of Independence. (Jaccob is spelled with two Cs.)

The crash remains under investigation.

Driver charged in crash that killed illegal aliens

     WICHITA, KAN. – The driver of a pickup truck carrying 19 illegal aliens that crashed in southwest Kansas Feb. 21, 2006, killing three persons, has been charged in federal court in Wichita.
        The driver, Fernando Tello Del Pilar, 22, Vera Cruz, Mexico, was charged with transporting illegal aliens during which death and serious injury occurred, a federal felony in which the maximum sentence is life in prison or death.

Men sought by FBI turn themselves in

   Two men wanted by the FBI for questioning in connection with last week's fatal bank robbery turned themselves in at Kansas City police headquarters late this morning.
   The men were accompanied by City Councilman Alvin Brooks. They had visited a convenience store near the scene of last Friday's robbery at UMB Bank, 7901 Wornall Road. The FBI released photos of the men Monday.
   A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to a conviction in the robbery.

DOUBLE HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION – 11TH St & Esplanade

Persons of interest

Kansas City, Kansas – The Kansas City Kansas Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate the homicides of Francisco Rodriguez and Geraldo Pablo Borjas Ramirez.  The bodies of the two victims were discovered on Thursday, February 23, 2006 in the 1100 block of Esplanade.

The detectives have found photos of ‘persons of interest’ in this case and are requesting the assistance of the public to obtain information regarding the identities of these two persons.

Anyone having information on the individuals is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Detectives at 913-573-6020, or KCKPD Communications at 913/596-3000 or the TIPS Hotline at 816/474-TIPS.

Parole denied again for ex-church secretary

   Once again, Lorna Anderson has been denied parole for another year.
   The former Emporia church secretary who had her husband killed in 1983 while she was having an affair with the church's minister, Tom Bird, has been passed over for parole for the fifth time.
   Anderson pleaded guilty in 1988 to second-degree murder in the death of her husband, Martin, and was sentenced to 15 years to life. She already had been convicted in 1984 of soliciting not only her husband's murder, but the murder of Bird's wife. That plot failed.
   Bird was convicted of first-degree murder for killing his wife, Sandra, and for solicitation of first-degree murder for the earlier failed attempt on Martin Anderson's life. He served 20 years of a life sentence and was released from prison in 2004.
   The bizarre case was made into a TV miniseries in 1987 called "Murder Ordained."

Leawood man sentenced for child porn

     KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A Leawood man was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to storing thousands of images of child pornography on his computer.
    Ray Andrus, 52, a former public school paraprofessional, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison. He appeared before U.S. District Judge Carlos Murguia in Kansas City.

Driver dies in crash on Missouri 7

Driver Killed in One Vehicle Crash

  • Independence Police are investigating a one vehicle crash that occurred on Missouri 7 Highway at Argo Road. The driver of the vehicle was killed. The crash occurred today at approximately 1:30 AM.
  • The vehicle involved in the crash was a white 1991 Ford F-250 pick up truck. The driver was the only occupant. There are no witnesses to the crash; however a motorist passing by called police after finding the vehicle overturned only a few feet from the highway.
  • Physical evidence at the scene indicates the Ford truck was northbound on Missouri 7 when it crossed the double yellow line and then veered out of control before overturning and coming to rest on its roof. The driver had to be extricated from the truck however he was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The identity of the driver will be withheld until his family is notified.  The crash remains under investigation.

Former treasurer's wife admits to embezzlement

  Usdoj_logo_25   KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The wife of the former treasurer of Willow Springs Township in Douglas County, Kan., was sentenced Monday to federal prison.
   Shelley Ausherman, 41, Baldwin City, Kan., was sentenced to 5 months in federal prison, followed by 5 months confinement in a halfway house. She appeared for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Carlos Murguia in Kansas City.

Gun lesson turns deadly

   Zachary B. Whiteley said he had been through three hunter safety courses and knew how to handle weapons.
   But over the weekend, he accidentally shot his girlfriend to death while teaching her how to operate a .38-caliber revolver.
   Whiteley, 23, of Springfield, was charged Monday with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the death of 36-year-old Tami Whittemore, also of Springfield. He told police he thought he had emptied the cylinder but didn't check to make sure before he showed Whittemore how to cock and uncock the gun. During the lesson, he said, his finger slipped and the gun fired. Whittemore was struck in the abdomen and died by the time paramedics arrived.

Taping tanners not illegal, lawyers argue

   The lawyers for a Springfield tanning salon owner charged with 22 counts of invasion of privacy for videotaping customers say Brett Kent did not break any laws.
   Kent is accused of using hidden cameras to secretly videotape customers as they tanned in various stages of undress.
   His lawyers are challenging Missouri's invasion-of-privacy law, saying it is unconstitutional. They say that according to the law, invasion of privacy occurs when images are taped for sexual gratification or desire.
   So what was Mr. Kent doing with the videos taken at his 360 Degrees salon? That hasn't yet been, um, revealed.

Deputy charged with having sex with inmate

   A former sheriff's deputy in Atchison County faces a maximum 22 months in jail for having sex with an inmate.
   Travis McBride, who was charged with four felony counts of unlawful sexual relations with an 18-year-old woman, pleaded no contest on Monday to one count under an agreement with prosecutors. The woman has accused McBride of rape and has filed a $2 million lawsuit. She was in the Atchison County Jail for a parole violation.

Riverside judge steps down after arrest

From the Riverside City Administrator:

   Riverside Mayor Pro Tem Ray Beard announced this morning that Charles M. McKeon has resigned his position, which he has held since May 24, 1992, as the Riverside Municipal Court Judge.  This follows an incident which occurred on February 26th when Mr. McKeon was arrested by officers of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department.

Dozens have died in Kansas jails, prisons

   In July 2004, a new law went into effect in Kansas that required the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to look into the deaths of all inmates.

   Since then, statistics show that 46 inmates have died. Of those, 28 were from natural causes. Another 14 were ruled suicides -- 12 in county jails and two in prisons.

   The good news? No inmates have killed other inmates during that period. The last time that happened was in 2000.
