Sex toys, parakeet found in fugitive's cabin

   A search of the Tennessee hideaway rented by escaped convict John Manard and his alleged accomplice, dog lady Toby Young, after their arrest Friday night turned up a smorgasbord of surprising items.
   Along with jigsaw puzzles, guitars, guns, books and sheet music, authorities combing through Cabin #9 at the East Port Marina & Resort found numerous sex toys, whips, kinky lingerie, a pornographic DVD and a computer.
  And a blue parakeet.
  The couple, missing since they fled Lansing Correctional Facility on Feb. 12 with Manard hidden in a dog crate, were captured northeast of Chattanooga after a high-speed chase.
  In an interview on Saturday, U.S. Marshal's Deputy Bob Church, of the Eastern District of
Tennessee,told me how the whole thing came down.
   He said the U.S. Marshal's Nashville office was contacted Friday with information that Manard may be in the Chattanooga area.
   “We located the vehicle in Chattanooga by a mall parking lot,” he said. “We weren’t sure exactly where it would be, but that’s a pretty busy mall area, and there’s a lot of hotels and stuff over there.”
   Church said they saw the pickup drive past them in the parking lot Friday night.
   “We noticed there was no tag on the vehicle,” he said. “So that was what lit us up. We did not see them get into the vehicle, but we saw what appeared to be a male and a female inside.”
   The pickup headed north on Interstate 75, Church said, and four marshal’s deputies in two unmarked cars fell in behind. They also contacted the U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Tennessee, who called for a helicopter and several support units.
   “They covered two directions of travel out of Nashville in case he switched directions on us,” Church said. “We also had some other people coming south on I-75 that were several exits above us.”
   The chase began about 30 miles north of Chattanooga, Church said, when the pickup passed some state patrol cars sitting in wait at on on-ramp.
   “The troopers were set up there ahead of us, and we were giving markers to them as we were coming,” he said. “I said, ‘He’s on you now,’ and as the truck passed under the underpass, the state troopers jumped right on them. They never knew we were following them until the troopers lit them up.”
   Church said the driver of the pickup refused to pull over.
   “Then he switched directions on us,” Church said. “He cut across the median and started heading south on I-75. He was exceeding 90, a hundred miles an hour.”
   Church said the pickup headed south for five to 10 miles.
  “He tried to pass some troopers on the right, because they were running zig-zag on him,” he said. “Then he lost control and skidded across the interstate and went on into the median again. That’s when he crashed into the trees.
   “He tried to get out, but the troopers were up on him by that time. He was arrested without incident.”
   The arrest was made in McMinn County, between Chattanooga and Knoxville.
   “He didn’t show us any resistance,” Church said. “He said, ‘I’m not going to give you any trouble. I just wanted to be free again.’ She was pretty passive.”
  Church said no weapons were found on the couple.
  “I believe we took 180 bucks off of him,” he said.
   The pickup was mangled in the crash, Church said.
  “We took them both to the hospital for observation,” Church said. “He said his chest hurt and his leg hurt. They took X-rays and they cleared him.”
   Church said the episode lasted about an hour.
   “It was pretty electric,” he said. “We had more blue lights than Kmart ever thought about. They were coming out of the woodwork, with cops flying everywhere, the helicopter in pursuit. And the longer it went, the more police assistance you got, because you were starting to cross county lines.”
   Church called the chase "amazing."
   "In my career, I’ve never done anything like that."

fOOd, I take it by your comment above that you have a chip on your shoulder, for what reason I'm not sure, perhaps a prior experience with rape/allegations of rape on your part? I sense that what you are saying or would really like to say, so poorly hidden in your post, is that you feel an animosity towards Toby and sympathize with Mannard somehow feeling that he may get accused of rape just because he is a guy. I just have to wonder again, what prompts your feelings? Is there something else you are not saying?

I'm sure any intelligent reader will realize that Toby is definitely above the age of consent and any plans or possibility for Manard to be charged with rape of Toby are ludicrous. In all the past occurrences such as this one, the flight/escape, no one has ever been charged with rape and so to even hint at that possibility, there must be deeper issues with the person (Food) who suggested it.

I would hate to be less than two weeks into a sexual relationship and already need sex toys, including a whip. Jeez!

I can't get my hands around the "apparent abduction" comments. I have always had the best thoughts of Toby and she has done some very spectacular things in her life. It is truly unfortunate that, for whatever her reasons, she has now tainted almost everything that was once important to her.

I will continue to support the program she established and I probably won't even think of her as a "bad" person, but I will certianly not be convinced that she deserves a warm welcome home.

I don't necessarily think of Tony as a bad person either, just somehow seriously deluded and mislead. However, she is and should be held accountable. Most of us confine our seriously dum mistakes to our growing up years. I don't know how or why this happened, of course. Part of me feels sorry for her, the other expects her to accept responsibility for what she's done, which thus far it seems she is doing. I don't think she is bad, but the thing she did is really bad and she will have to live with the consequences.

Anybody who thinks Toby was abducted after all the evidence, that she planned a place to hide her van that she used to get Manard out of prison, that she bought another vehicle to afford them transportation to Tennessee and that she asked the title be sent to Tennessee is clear and compelling evidence she knew exactly what she was doing. As to the sex toys, who knows, maybe it was part of her intrigue with Manard. Maybe it was just silly. It really doesn't matter why, and I hope it isn't used to further distress her family.

I did follow this case because it was definitely salient to me. As far as I am concerned, though, it is over. During the hunt there could have been important information posted or leads could have been conveyed to the entire country but the simple fact is now they are caught. Why is it important for us to know there were sex toys and pornographic DVD's? Sure the circumstances around this situation sparked people's interest, but releasing that kind of information seems to be a tool used by the media. If the headline read "Half-completed puzzle found" nobody would think twice or even cared.

I fear I run the risk of condoning an act, but I'm going to say it: I'm sure there are thousands of people cheating on their spouses in this country right now...that is not news. The prison escape and the capture were news. The verdict and sentencing may be news. The fact that a married woman engaged in sexual acts with someone other than their spouse really has no place in the papers. This is just adding unnecessary attention and embarassment to the family.

When going from point A to point Z in this whole saga, one can see that Manard did not force her to do this against her will. It's not like he had a gun held to her head while in prison, telling her to get him out or else. He coerced her in a different way (emotionally of course), but she had the freedom of choice to decide if she really wanted to go through with it or not.

This woman fell for a convict, maybe she felt her existance was uneventful, and this guy offered her something she felt she needed, but the end result is she has brought shame on her family, her friends, and far worse, herself. Child sex / premaritial sex is out of control in the U.S. According to a survey that was posted in an issue of Columbia magazine, 55% of childeren between the ages of 15 and 17 have had sex at least once, and at least 30% of children between the ages of 13 and 15 have engaged in sexual activities. Since children under the age of 16 are not allowed to get married without parental conscent, and children (defined as anyone under the age of 18, according to the U.S. Government) are not allowed to marry unless they have parental conscent - most of these sexual activities going on amoungst our children are premaritial. Premaritial sex is one of the worst sins there is, and in fact premaritial sex is worse of a moral and spiritual fault than looking at the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

It's astounding how I am one of the only 20 year olds that goes to church on a weekly basis. I think if more parents encouraged their children and young adults participitated in spiritual and religious activities, the world would be a less violent and more peacefull, moral, and loving place.

If you are serious than I will give you a medal; I am sure that is why you are telling us. It makes no difference if you go to church and do not partake in premarital sex. That's great for you. Parents should encourage their kids to engage in activities that will teach them about responsibility, respect and kindness towards others. Then we should teach our kids that God hates people that dont abstain from sex. I think that school would be a good place for this. In this morning's article in the KC Star, I read that the parakeet holds the key to what really happened. The bird has been sent to the US facility at Gitmo where its tounge will be nipped so it can talk, and it will be given a little dose of sodium pentathol (truth serum) so it can be interviewed by detectives trying to determine what it saw and heard in the cabin. Be patient. In a couple of days, we'll have the bird's first-hand account of what really happened. Unless he takes the fifth.
