E-mail just now from local programmer Brett Rickman, who has been mapping crime data I've posted here on his Website, www.rickman.com:
Brett has been using Google Earth to make maps with a dot over each crime address location. He's plotted Overland Park as well as Kansas City offenses.
Now he's mapped 1,200-plus homicide addresses from my recent post, 11 years of Kansas City homicide. On his site, scroll down to the bottom of the list of maps and you'll find a detailed map of homicides for each year, 1995-2005.

Shooting by police puzzles man's family
Relatives of a man wounded by police Tuesday night said Thursday that they wanted questions answered.
An officer shot Anthony N. Cherco, 20, of Kansas City in the abdomen about 11 p.m. Tuesday. Cherco, who won two professional boxing matches as a super featherweight in 2004, was in serious condition Thursday, relatives said.
Cherco’s uncle, Mike Moreno, said relatives had not been allowed to visit Cherco. Police said he was under guard at the hospital.
Two officers said they stopped Cherco’s car in the 500 block of Spruce Avenue after he tried to pick up a prostitute.
Moreno said his nephew “was no angel” but doubted that he approached a prostitute, and wondered why two officers could not arrest Cherco without shooting him.
Police spokesman Capt. Rich Lockhart said the two officers fought Cherco for 90 seconds. The fight occurred on sloped ground, which made it hard for officers to get their footing, he said. The officer who fired his gun said he nearly lost consciousness after Cherco tackled and choked him.
“They tried to bring this to a peaceful conclusion, but they could not,” Lockhart said.

Leawood police were showing a new officer yesterday how to enter data in the department's computer system.
Naturally, the "test" data showed up in the report sent to media this morning:

The offenses on Ensley Lane are fictional. You can tell by the out-of-sequence report
numbers, said Major John Meier.
This is somewhat like the Boston Globe editor in 1980 who, over an editorial about President Carter, jokingly put the headline "Mush from the wimp." It got published, of course.

Daily report from Leawood police. Today: a drug arrest at 119th & State Line and an update on a burglary last year. Leawood PD Maj. John Meier: The burglary update resulted from identification of a suspect, and the drug arrest involved a small amount of pot discovered during a traffic stop.

The number of serious crimes reported to Kansas City police in January and February was the lowest of any year since at least 1990, a study of police-supplied shows.
Serious crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, serious assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. They are known collectively as Part 1 offenses.
Some caveats - Lower numbers for burglary and larceny are behind the drop; violent crime actually ticked up from last year. Also, two months do not a trend make, and January-February are always the lowest crime months.
But the number of February Part 1 offenses was so low (2,393, compared to the second-lowest, 2,525 in 2003) that I thought it noteworthy:

An appeals court today rejected everything LSD maker William Pickard (right) had to say, according to U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren's office.

Who's got the acid? Today, almost nobody
The 91-pound acid trip: The numbers touted by the government in its big LSD bust just don't add up
91 pounds? That's 400 million doses! Or 2 billion. Or 2.8 billion (all numbers reported in the press). Slate reporter Ryan Grim found that Pickard ran an LSD lab for sure, but that the amount was more likely 91 pounds of something with traces of LSD on it.
