Missouri tops in known meth labs

AP story in The Star today:

• WASHINGTON — Some states with significant methamphetamine problems have not received their share of federal money because lawmakers have directed most of a grant program to favored projects in their districts.
• Missouri was cited Thursday by the Justice Department’s inspector general as one example of a shortchanged state. Missouri ranked second, behind California, in seizing 11,859 meth labs between 1998 and 2004. But it was 10th in grants received, with $3.7 million. Texas and Illinois were 10th and 11th in the number of labs seized, but 23rd and 25th, respectively, in money from the meth initiative.

Well. If you figure the number of known meth labs in each state by the number of actual households, Missouri leaves the rest of the country - including California - behind:

Hey, I know it’s not PC but I am just stating the facts. If blacks were acting like this I would be just as upset, but it’s not blacks using it, its white "trash." Its not Hispanics, its not Asians, its not anyone else but white trash.

Witht the exception of California, all of the states listed are mostly rural. Meth cooking requires a rural locale.

This information really doesn't tell us anything, except that Missouri is perhaps the best at identifying known meth labs. I'd take that to mean that Missouri has done the best job of sniffing them out.

I thought I would shine some actual statistics on the subject.

Accourding to the Federal Drug Offender List in 2001, the percent of arrest made for Meth were as follows. 59% white, 35% hispanic, 4.2% other and 1.6% black.

Congrats Openmind! Black America is the best in not doing Meth. Oh but I forgot, blacks are the highest in the unemployment rate (9.3%). The national average is 4.8% (white- 4.1%, hispanics 5.5%). I couldn't believe the stats when I read it. You would think by the look of the hood that everyone has a job. Its so clean and crime free.

My point is that we all know that you are right about the Meth stats, but that is just one of many problems that we face in America. You also have a negative way of putting things. We could sit here all day and toss around stats, but it will just prove how ugly of a country we actually live in. I don't care where you are from (the hood, suburbs, rural, etc.), we all have issues. Drugs (not just meth), gambling, alcoholism, smoking, polution, racism, unemployment, child abuse, sex offenders, etc. I don't think I need to go any further.

Until the day we all decide to work together for the common good we will live in a nation that is "dirty". There are to many damn people that just feel so damn bad because everything is pointed towards them. Its the "everybody picks on me" syndrome.

Look at where meth is produced and used - the suburbs, exurbs, and small towns. There are no meth labs in the urban cores of KC or St. Louis. Crack houses, yes. Meth labs, no. Meth and crack use are very highly correlated with specific racial groups.

On the other end of the spectrum, MO in the bottom quartile high school graduation rates and has among the more lenient laws on DUI.

Andrea - guess you have never been to Independence and visited the historical sites. I thought the same as you until I moved here from Johnson County. Independence is rich in history. Yes, it seems Independence is in the news alot but for that I would thank my police department. They are in the streets doing something instead of guarding the local donut shop. Meth & Cocaine are a huge illegal import business from Mexico. Maybe somebody should see the writing on the wall...hispanics are killing off white and blacks with their drugs so they can take over.

Hey TEX, sad to say i just moved to Independence :(, yes i'm putting down the city i live in! but only lived here a few months. I know Independence is rich in history, i don't doubt that. It's just sad how when someone mentions Independence it's automatically associated with meth.
