The Scam: Two senior citizens in Johnson County have reported receiving "phishing" attacks this week - attempts by phone to learn their bank account info.
The Targets: A rural Edgerton woman, 68, who reported the call Monday to the Sheriff's Office, and Donald B., 84, of Leawood, who called me today. Neither fell for the likely scam.
The Hook: Donald said a caller identifying himself as Marcus Hunt of the U.S. Department of Public Relations, asked him for his bank account number and routing info in order to receive a $5,000 government grant.
"Right then and there I knew there was something fishy," Donald said. The caller knew his name and home address as well as his phone number, he said.
The Scammers: With your bank account and routing info, these often foreign-based callers can raid your account.
How to avoid being victimized: 1) Never give your bank info to unknown callers 2) If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Resource: www.antifishing.org.
