American Indian activist Leonard Peltier failed to convince a
federal appeals court that he was sentenced illegally for the 1975
murders of two FBI agents on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian
Formerly imprisoned in Leavenworth, Peltier, 61, is serving two consecutive life sentences at a federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania. His lawyers had argued that the federal court that sentenced him lacked jurisdiction because the murders occurred on an Indian reservation.
The appeals court ruled, however, that federal courts have jurisdiction over anyone who kills federal officers performing their official duties. - Mark Morris, Star
