Jackson County prosecutors accused a woman Wednesday of beating her
91-year-old mother with a cane, threatening her with a knife and
keeping her hostage in her own home.
Ruby Shinn called police about 10 p.m. Tuesday when her daughter
left to buy food. When officers arrived in the 300 block of East 79th
Terrace, they found Shinn with large bruises on her body and a compound
fracture of her right arm. A bone protruded through her skin, and her
right hand was dark, discolored and swollen, according to court records.
A few moments later, Shinn’s daughter, Carolyn J. Hanks, 53,
returned home. Shinn pointed at her and said, “My daughter is trying to
kill me,” according to police reports.
