Joco DUI: At least 99.1% of drivers sober
This has got to be one of the least successful, or most successful, sobriety checkpoints, depending on your point of view :
- Date: Saturday 11 p.m. - Sunday 2 a.m.
- Location: 119th St. & Renner Rd
- Drivers: 1,226
- DUI arrests: 11 (0.9% - just under 1 in 100)
- Agencies: Olathe, Overland Park, Merriam, Lenexa, KHP, JoCo sheriff's office
Other arrests:
- 7 transporting open container.
- 3 MIPs (minors in possession)
- 3 drag-racers
- 3 drug possession charges
From Olathe police:
- "The Olathe Police Department along with the surrounding Johnson County Law Enforcement agencies will continue to operate checkpoints in an effort to educate the motoring public and removing intoxicated driver's from the roadways. All motorist are urged to use a designated driver and don't drink and drive."
- News release

drag-racers? were they lining up getting ready for the 1/4 mile and suddenly the checkpoint appeared?
i smell harassment

That first quote from Olathe police--whoo, I'm laughing at that one:
"The Olathe Police Department along with the surrounding Johnson County Law Enforcement agencies will continue to operate checkpoints in an effort to educate the motoring public and removing [sic]intoxicated driver's [sic] from the roadways. All motorist [sic] are urged to use a designated driver and don't [sic] drink and drive."
I am setting up my own grammar checkpoint for them. lol

Well dang, either people don't drink and drive as much in JoCo (which I doubt) or they picked the worst spot they possibly could have to set up this checkpoint.
Oh, and yes AeroSquid. JoCo spent hundreds of man hours to harass 3 drag racers.

Having said that, it wouldn't suprise me. If this situation isn't proof that JoCo cops have nothing better to do, I don't know what is.

You should be glad that JOCO has that much time to spend. I am not sure what exactly is out at 119th and Renner, but look at the time on the check point. It stops before all the bars are probably closed. Plus people in JOCO can read, so they must have just avoided that intersection.

Johnson County people are to busy competing with their neighbors to go out & have a good time. We have to one up the neighbors by picking a unique name for their kids (Skylar or Montgomrey), looking for the SUV that will transport up to 30 kids, & seeing if their neighbors pop up house has the tile backsplash like theirs. Busy Busy.

Headline:"This has got to be one of the least successful, or most successful, sobriety checkpoints, depending on your point of view"
1,226 civil rights violations seems very unsuccessful...

Yes, it's against their right to drive drunk and kill people.
The locations of the check points aren't a big secret. Find out where they are, and take an alternate route. If you have been drinking, find a designated driver or call a cab.
Next thing you know NAACP will be complaining about their right to take money from a bank, even if they don't have money there because they should have the right to have that money.
It's just another way for "The Man" to keep us all down.

The DUI is just a band-aid. Stop driving tonight pay your way out of it next month. What is needed is a rail system in the metro. Sprawlers stop moving out to the ends of the earth so you can get the tile backsplash. Quit competing with each other. Move to the city & make friends. End of the night hit the KC Marta or the KC L. Stumble home the remainng block. Bite a leaf of a tree while your at it for fun.

119th & Renner??? is there even anyplace to get a drink within 2 miles of there? That's like right in the middle of a bland office park, isn't it?

Biggin - not everyone enjoys the downtown living. I mean there is some good scenery, the homeless, the steel plates on the street, the crackheads, the people being released from jail at 10th and Main, the ladies on the avenue. My gosh, I am selling my home today.

I do agree that 119th & Renner was a poor choice...
Biggin: There are specific, tangible reasons why people choose to not live in KC, MO. Do I really need to spell those out? Have a problem actually competing for a job, or what?

Alright JC & Angry you can choose to isolate negative factors of city living, but I did not see anything like crown center, sprint center, President Hotel Drum Room, Union Hill, etc.. on your list.
