Jury verdict clears police
A Jackson County jury on Monday found police were not liable for sending a Kansas City man to prison, even though a judge ruled previously that officers had framed the man.
Salient points:
- This was an ex-con and police informant, Oren Gamble, who said a son and nephew of two KC cops was a burglar; during a setup with the nephew in 1985, Gamble was arrested and sent to prison for burglary.
- When he got out, Gamble recorded the nephew as saying, "“When he rolled over on me, I rolled right back over on him."
- In 2001, a Jackson County judge saw the tapes and other evidence, overturned Gamble’s conviction and ordered him freed.
-
A juror told Star courts reporter Joe Lambe that the panel could not conclude that police acted maliciously, as required by the jury instructions.
Good story, Lambo.
