Man shot by police, critically wounded

From Kansas City police, 2:01 a.m. Sunday:

• Two officers were driving in the area of 83^rd Terrace and Troost when they observed a male and a female involved in a disturbance on the side of Troost.  When the officers stopped to investigate, the male ran away from the officers.  One of the officers pursued the man.
• When the man was in a parking lot on the northeast corner of 83^rd Terrace and Troost he reached his hand into his pocket, turned his body, and pointed what the officer believed was a gun at him (at the time of this e-mail we have not confirmed what exactly the male pointed at the officer since we did not immediately find a gun).
• Fearing for his life, the officer shot the man.  The man was taken to an area hospital where he was being treated for his injuries.  The man was believed to be in his 30’s and was in critical condition at the hospital.  The officer has been with the department since January of 1999.
