Arrest in abduction, rape of waitress

Pulled into van, hog-tied with duct tape
A "regular customer" at Harrah’s North Kansas City Casino has been arrested in the abduction, beating and rape of a 34-year-old waitress from the casino parking lot.
She was rescued by police Wednesday afternoon after being attacked by the man at his home for most of the day, police said. She was taken to a hospital.

Update: David Martin has been charged with rape in Clay County Circuit Court in connection with the case. KC police photo.

Channel 4 said this morning it was her doctor, then another paper said it was someone who resided at her apartment.. Now, he's a regular at the casino? How are they going to figure this one out? I heard all along it was a regular visitor to the casino. Never heard the doctor / apartment story on KCTV5. Obviously he doesn't live in her apartment building if he took her to his house. This morning on the news they showed the car in the garage with his car tag visible - let's run it! :)

Yeah I was curious about the car tag thing. Typically they don't show a full plate in focus. I too only heard that it was a regular to the casino. And it is not uncommon for regular customers to give gifts to waitresses or other workers that they know. Should the waitresses follow people to their cars to get them? Probably not, but you never suspect seemingly nice people of evil acts like this.

jamie: It was channel 4 that said the Dr thing, then I don't know which newspaper I was gliding through and read that he lived with/by her? I know, you don't hear of too many Dr's living in apartments.. Sometimes the media throws in little tidbits to make the story more appealing. I think they need to tell it straight up. I know newspapers and TV news stations have had to appoligize for making incorrect statements when stating the news.. It's a cluster mess..

Ok first question comes to mind. Why if she was assulted and taken from her car there, why wasn't sercurity there at this time. They have camera's all over the place and in parking areas. while what this guy did is totally wrong some of the blame needs to be the the casino for providing no security.

Parking lot security cameras and casino cameras are two totally different sectors. I agree that the Security department probably could have done a better job, but that being said the so called "high-tech" security cameras are on the casino floor, not the parking lots. The parking lot cameras probably have black and white feeds on a screen with 12 cameras each, probably three or four screens, with probably one person watching them all. And that person may have other duties too, like answering phone calls and dispatching security officers. I was a security officer once at a large downtown hotel and it was the same set-up. Multi-tasking leads to not being able to watch every camera, every second.

The police get hundreds of 911 hang ups,false alarms and parties wanted every day,the only thing they are allowed to do is look around the area if know one answers the door or if they donot hear anything they have to leave. they cannot force entry without a warrant. Well, in that position, as a Harrah's waitress, I assume you have to be friendly and flirty with people in order to earn your tips, etc. But rule of thumb for the waitreses, they should not accept gifts in which you have to go back to someone's car to retrieve them. Even if he is a regular, common sense is you have no idea who you are dealing with at the casino. Don't accept gifts from them, unless it is a cash tip, inside the premises. You get a little bit of everything attending the casinos. Pedophiles, stalkers, alcoholics, druggees, regular people. It's just one big smorgasborg and you can't determine who is good and who is bad. It's a tough yet dangerous job! I think they're entitled to a raise seeing they have no idea what they're dealing with on a regular basis. Why in the world would she go back to his van? When he said, I have something for you in my van, she should have said no thanks and went on her way.

Concerning the questions of security, the employee parking lot at Harrah's is quite a distance from the building itself. They moved the parking lot about a year ago to accomadate the new hotel that they were building. There were questions raised at this time about security, due to that fact that they were asking employees to walk quite a distance late at night. As far as surveilence, at that time of night, and that day of week, security is at a much reduced force. I am a former employee of Harrah's and a few other casinos here in Kansas City, and I have known David since 1995. He was the kind of person that just didn't seem right, although many of the waitresses befriended him. He gave them gifts etc., and you can argue whether this is right or wrong on their parts. I wish I could go back in time and knowing what I know now, and do something. Your gut feeling is something you should never ignore, and I wish I hadn't for the past 10 years.

I worked at casino for 2 years; valet. People urinate on sidewalk, steal anything not tied down, curse at you, treat women like sex objects, walk around the place like they are special, and in general act like animals. Do not tell me how they are decent people. Every time some idiot says they are decent people we read about a rape, murder or both. Wake up america and call it like it is. Casinos breed losers. Since they have opened nothing but despair has came from them. suicide up, forclosures up, small business owners bankrupt and divorce up among casino patrons and workers. Stop blaming the victim. I used to work at Harrah's. When they moved the parking lot, the question of security came up. There are (at least not at the time I was there 2 yrs ago) no cameras watching the employee lot.

Their answer to security is they will give you a ride to your car if you request.

Why did she go to the man's van? I have heard from very good cocktail server friends there stories of customers handing wads of cash, electronics, jewlery and other very expensive items. They can't accept that stuff out on the floor, or they have to give them up. I'd go to someone's van so I could make 5 house payments or pay off my car, just for being nice and showing some clevage.

Just an FYI.

"Dr." doesn't just apply to someone with an M.D., or D.O. (what we normally think of when we hear the term)... it also rightfully includes anyone with a Ph.D., or any other "Doctorate of xxx" degrees (I think dentisty, physical therapy, chiropractic, etc. have doctoral degrees).

That said, a Ph.D. is not easy to get (no doctoral degree is)... but a Ph.D. doesn't get paid very much (compared to an M.D., or D.O.) so it is feasible that he could live in an apartment.

They had said on the news at 10pm that she was also 4 months pregnant. The reason she went to meet him in the parking lot was supposedly so he could give her his deceased mothers china, so she went for it.Just because you've waited on someone ina casino for years, does not mean they are trustworthy people. I use to work with this guy, until about 2 weeks ago, when he stopped coming to work. he got fired because of it. He was a hot head and would go off for no reason. so it doesnt surprise me to see this lunatic in the news. Everybody that worked with him thuoght he was a little mental anyway. I worked 3 years at Harrah's with this waitress and I know I speak on behalf of all of my formers co-workers in the Beverage Department when I say that this girl, whom I adore, has a heart of pure gold and she would do anything for anybody. She is a wonderful human being, and for those of us who have been fortunate to know her, we are devastated by these events. She has the extremely rare ability to see the good in everyone, even people that you would swear are pure evil. That is why I, and others, look up to her and, even though I don't see her anymore, I still think of her, and wish I could be more like her.
I just had to write because it seems like whenever something like this happens, the press or public seem to pick apart what the girl should have done better to avoid becoming a victum, and then the facts are overlooked. Such is the case with this Dave Martin because it is clear (and the evidence will surface) that he premeditated this horrible ordeal and carried it out, and misled someone whom he sensed he could easily take advantage of. Believe me, even though I have not spoken to her, she did not want any china, she just could not find it in her heart to say "no". There is not anything she did or said that made this psycho do what he did, he alone is responsible, and to further quote Suamuel, I hope he burns in hell.
