Interim Jackson County prosecutor named

Outgoing Jackson County Prosecutor Mike Sanders tapped the head of the office’s Family Support Division on Thursday to become interim county prosecutor.
Melissa Mauer-Smith, a 20-year veteran and the office’s longest-acting chief trial assistant, will lead the office starting Jan. 2, when Sanders becomes county executive. She will serve as interim prosecutor until a replacement is named to finish Sanders’ term, in about two weeks.
