A Connecticut state police unit ran a DUI-arrest competition, mishandling evidence and busting drivers whether they were drunk or not, a state probe has found, according to the Hartford Courant:
- Advised drivers NOT to take a Breathalyzer
- Turned off their cameras -- only 14 of 500 arrests videotaped
- Accepted a 2003 award as "DWI enforcement leader" for the region
Worse, the state police internal affairs unit botched this and at least 18 other investigations, the 168-page state report said.
Hat tip to reader anon!

Big surprise, state police internal affairs unit botched this and at least 18 other investigations.
Can you say favoritism, whitewash, or back scratching?
I knew you could

BS Steve, blondie2hot7, I feel slighted I wasn't mentioned in the same post...yesterday some chucklehead gave me props for being BS Steve's life partner..
signalthree..good to see you in on this one. And Not Sure.
These officers screwed the pooch for DWI cases in CT for the past and the future with their actions. One thing though, they did protect the subjects constiutional rights by advising them not to take the breathylizer.
I bet the AG and the State Patrol is gonna come down on these troopers hard, because it's going to open a floodgate of suits and appeals that they have no way of defending.
And it also disrespects the officers that do their job. Conduct themselves in a professional manner, and get the real drunks off the roads in the US.
And disrespects the memory of the DUI officer in Colorado Springs that made the ultimate sacrifice in doing his job. And he did his job well, with professionalism that should be a model for all DUI traffic units.
Maybe you all should stop baiting BS Steve and blondie2hot7 and think for a minute how officers entrusted to serve and protect took a serious life saving task and made it into a game.

Oh...and hi JC...I forgot to mention you..easy to do considering some of your posts...
Posted by: The DB | Thursday, December 07, 2006 at 11:00 AM
no worries DB, I prefer to have intelligent people acknoledge my existence and not people with random thoughts. First, I do agree this has marred the name of the police in that area (if in fact they are found guilty of this). It has opened the way for law suits, but in this day and age you really do not even need a valid reason to sue. Next, I do disagree that this in any way disrespects the CO officer. It has nothing to do with him or his. Lastly, I do not see having a fun little game, or competition, out of it. As long as it is all done legally and true DUI's are being taken off the street. Anyway I do not expect you, DB, to read or comprehend this post. Good luck in your life of us v. them.

JC, JC, JC,...
Random thoughts?
When you bring to the table a person's union membership to a story about police officers bringing disgrace to their badge? Give me a break!
Can you imagine what kind of mood the judge and prosecuting attorney are in right now having to sort out all the misdeeds of the "gaming club" officers brought into the court?
And do you actually think they don't have a valid reason to bring suit against the agency? Or at least get their cases retried?
And you disagree that this disrespects the Colorado Springs officer that gave his life and other officers that actually do justice to the badge that they swore to serve and protect, to uphold the constitution?
I didn't go after BS Steve and blondie on the third post (after the other two posts which had nothing to do with the story did...sorry you had to be last again)..
I read, comprehend, and click on links regarding posts here. I may disagree with some of the posts of Steve, but at least I check out where he is coming from.
And lastly, it is not us vs. them...It is the right (even yours if you show a link or more than a slam) of all of us to voice our opinions. Remember, this is December 7. A lot of fine men and women gave their lives to let us rant on the internet today. Would be good of you not to disrespect them by at least bringing a valid point.

And these cops are a joke and should be jailed on each case accordingly...I am thinking 5 yrs. on shutting off the cams. each.5 years on each case of giving advise since that is entrapment...Which is suposedly illegal....
Posted by: BS Steve | Thursday, December 07, 2006 at 04:04 PM
I guess those cops forgot that little thing called "Miranda"....and you are right BS Steve, by shutting off the cams they are tampering with possible evidence, which would show they were possibly doing more illegal acts.
