Florida deputy admits stealing wallet
Bad: Deputy steals wallet.
Good, but not good enough: Deputy admits theft and shows where he threw wallet out.
- He is charged with grand theft, suspended without pay and is about to be fired.
Hat tip to reader blondie2hot7!

No abuse of power happening??
I know the arguement that there is good cops out there and they are not all bad like this....But honestly how do we as the public distinguish the good from the bad???
Are we to just simply sit back and ignore facts the bad are out there???
I am just not picking a fight here...I just want to know an oppinion....Bad enough we have to worry bout the bad guys but when our own law enforcement we are supposed to trust starts turning bad aswell....It gets touchy...

Deputy Dawg probably made about $25K a year ... how is he supposed to feed his family if he doesn't steal? LOL
Just kidding. He sucks. The end.

Come on.....
Greg - are you really telling me that a story like this is worthy of posting on a Kansas City crime blog? You are progressively getting to the point of finding every possible story that sheds a member of Law Enforcement in a bad light and posting in here.....
Where are the stories about the journalists that steal, beat their wives, molest children, or drive drunk? Are you telling me they never break the law? I have dealt with several of your co-workers personally over the years and I'd bet that as a percentage, members of the media commit significantly more crimes than members of Law Enforcement.
This type of story is the reason I've pretty much stopped posting on this site (and stopped reading it). There seems to be no intention to report crime related stories - and every intention to post stories about bad-cops to cater to your liberal buddies.
I have pretty much lost all respect for you over the past few months (and believe it or not - when you started this blog I really felt you were trying to present an informative place to discuss crime related stories), since you have made a point of posting your "bad cop of the day" stories.

How could Greg post 'em if they weren't in the media to begin with? -- which means, sad to say, there ARE a few bad 'uns out there making the rest of y'all look bad.
Same in every profession, race, gender, etc.
The truth ain't always pretty -- it just is.

Hey, Greg post's stories about good cops, when he can find them that is. This story is newsworthy., You have to understand, for every story there is about a cop doing good, there are about 20 stories about cops doing bad. That's life in the city.

W!,
Are you that goofy???
Greg has posted good cop stories...And has defended them aswell...Why dont you put as much heart into your little speech on those once in awhile......
BTW:I noticed you avoided my question...How do you distinguish the good and bad in any person???Let alone one that has as much power as cops have gained....
I know its a good dodge to just say you have to trust us....But thanks,No thanks...I will keep my guard up....And I will stand by carrying a firearm of my own....All though I may never use it....But there is always a first time..Like this story for instance...Somthing not heard of happens.....

I am a supporter,People need some sort of law enforcement to keep them inline..But when it starts to walk the line of corruption because of a few bad apples...Public pressure needs to be utilised in order to tell them we are watching.....
Imagine what guys like this in this story would do if pressure was not applied...Like it or not it would run rampant....You know it and I know it....Just because a few stories come out police are not going to lose complete power and create chaos....

First BS, I didn't "avoid" your question - I simply don't read your posts any more because they all say basically the same thing.
I have become an infrequent visitor of this blog lately because there has become a long history of a focus on stories that shed members of Law Enforcement in a bad light. I think when you take local, state, and fedral combinded, there are close to a million members of LE in the US. In ANY population you will find bad apples and those that have no morals or character. To insinuate (like you do - and like many of these stories do) that law enforcement is rampant with corruption is just "goofy". I can honestly say that every "bad cop" I have ever worked with has been fired or has resigned. We (co-workers) know who they are and stay away from them. When we hear that someone is doing something wrong they become lonely very quickly. Take a look at the cop who killed his girlfriends daughter - you didn't see this huge "blue wall" that is apparently so prevelant jump out to protect him.
There is this insinuation by many folks out there that most cops are just looking for their chance to steal or cheat - or frame someone. The truth is I have seen cops that will spend an hour recovering into our property log a penny found on the floor of their patrol car - just so that some arrest can't claim they stold it from them. I would guess that 90% of the cops I work with are hard-working and do their best every day..... 9.99999% are doing their job but are just trying to get a paycheck, and .00001% are "dirty". The fact is - that .00001% will always get caught.... they never get to retire after being a "bad cop".
My biggest problem with what Greg, and the media in general do is they put such a focus on these few bad eggs - so that practically every day there is a story in the paper or on TV about the corruption that is so "rampant" in Law Enforcement. People like you talk about how you can't trust cops.... but the fact is - if you called the police tomorrow - there is a 99.9999% chance that the cop who shows up will do their job to the best of their abilities and will take pride in what they do. However, you are the type of person that won't be happy no matter what they do. You will go into any Law Enforcement encounter with the idea that the cop is dirty and looking to screw you over.
With that said - people like you insinuate that the cops out there treat every person like a criminal and aren't fair with them. You give the impression that a person walking down the street will be beat, charged with false crimes, and stolen from becaus the cops are so corrupt. And, when the media spends so much time focusing on stories like this - they make the average citizen feel the same way. I personally take pride in what I do - and I treat every person with respect and dignity until such point as I am treated differently - then I respond accordingly (if you take a swing at me or spit in my face I'm not going to say "thank you sir" and wait for you to do it again). Stories like this make the average citizen (who most likely has little if any contact with police) feel as though the cops are the bad guys. The truth is - even though there are bad cops - they are there to protect and serve. There are many of us out here that take pride in what we do and strive to be fair to everyone. It's tough to gain the trust of a person that feels you are going to beat them, steal from them, or frame them.
My biggest problem with a story like this is that it serves NO PURPOSE. What does a theft of a wallet in Florida have to do with crime in Kansas City (except to shed members of Law Enforcement in a bad light). Do you have any idea how many wallets or purses were stolen in Kansas city this week? Probably 30 or 40 (just a guessitmate). They aren't in the media. If I look back on this blog in the past month I will see stories of cops getting DUI's, beating their children, or stealing. If memory serves, there were 3 prominent local members of the media arrested for DUI last month, 2 for Domestic Violence, and a couple for theft of some sort. How many around the country were arrested for similar stuff? How come a cop doing this is news - but your local star anchor isn't? There is always this claim of cops "covering up" for each other (even though every bad cop incident I can think of over the past few years has been prominent in the media), but when a local weather star is accused of rape - nobody even hears about it.
I just get tired of getting on here and seeing stories that have absolutely no relevence to the Kansas City area.
I really did have respect for Greg when this blog was started - I thought he was going to be fair.... but the nature of this blog is going downhill and I'm just not sure if I want to participate anymore.
PS.... I do want to mention that although I'm not trying to toot my own horn, I have always tried to get on here and offer a civil Law Enforcement perspective and offer intelligent thoughtful reponses to issues. I have never (that I can remember) resorted to name calling, or childish behavior. I have only asked that Greg try to be fair in his "reporting" and offer an unbiased perspective. I just feel like it is getting harder to remain professional when Greg is turning this blog into a Jerry-Springer like free-for-all.

W!,
Your rant is all it needs to say....
You have insinuated I would "swing" at a cop I would pick a fight with a cop..I would sue a cop over a penny (good one btw) I am not that desperate....
And you must not watch any news because I hate to tell ya most of the stories on this blog are from other sources not the STAR....Keep living the dream, corrupt cops are not just quiting all over the place..When they do wrong....When one does somthing wrong it does affect all of them....Afterall who are they representing when they put that badge on their chest and agree to uphold the "constitution"???
Now the truth is as I said if stories on cops such as this one in FL. are not reported on them...What do you think would happen..It is not an arguement that pretty much of all law enforcement has the same powers no matter what state or level they are in,It is all basically the same....
And when you see complete stations being emptied by the FBI on drug trafficing and theft, embezzlement etc...It leaves a dirty taste in your mouth....

Excuse me BS - but I was never referring to YOU - I was making general statements about the public and how member of LE act.... so sorry if you interpreted my comment at you... but it was s general statement.
As far as new stories.... are you saying that an auto theft in Nome Alaska is important to the citizens of Kansas City? Are you saying that a person getting a speeding ticket in New Hampshire effects the citizens of KCMO. Why are relatively minor news stories from across the country that have NO RELEVANCE to us important?
I don't understand your third paragraph... it doesn't make sense... please rephrase it.
As far as complete stations being emptied by the FBI.... what is not mentioned in a majority of these cases is that it is a good honest cop who ultimately turns in the ditry ones. The "good" cop (or cops) often are lumped in with the bad guys and often lose their jobs or careers because they are doing the right thing.

Sorry I didnt know there was rules to news on how important it is to KC......
I never see you throw these fits on any blogs unless it pertains to cops.....
You must hate the internet......It is world wide.....Like all these stories are gonna just hide away...
"people like you insinuate that the cops out there treat every person like a criminal and aren't fair with them."
With that statement btw you did lump me in with that said group...I pointed your attention to.........

My theory.....If you want to be a cop dont steal.
Posted by: candacemc72 | Wednesday, January 03, 2007 at 11:27 AM
police steal to.they are human, noone is bashing the police but this one is a thief that happens to be a POLICE, it takes all kind to make the world go round,
Posted by: smoothk | Wednesday, January 03, 2007 at 11:31 AM
The problem lies with police the upholders of the law breaking the law. The are and should be held to higher standard than the citizens they police. Its a good day in hell when the police break the law, hw can you do your job effectively if you cant even refrain from breaking the law. Yes they are human but if they steal or ect then they should work at Mcdonalds. Humans work there....
