« Ward Parkway shooting follow-up | Main | 2 injured in Westport stabbing »

Monday, April 30, 2007

I just spent the last few hours transcribing the recordings that KCPD released of Sunday's shooting. (We've also got them posted here and here.) The one thing that struck me was the officer who got shot at the Valero on Bannister. If you end up listening to them, his number is 239.

There's a lot of chatter on the tapes, but 239 -- who'd just been injured in a gun battle -- is frosty cool. Guy was able to give description, direction, the whole rundown on the suspect. He even pipes up a couple of minutes later to warn other officers about the shooter being suicidal.

Maybe it was just a flesh wound or a graze, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he was shot and was still able to keep his focus in an incredibly stressful situation. There was no tell in his voice that he'd even stubbed his toe, much less been hit by a bullet.
