Just got off the phone with Sgt. Randy Sims. I was curious if police had more calls or arrests in downtown Saturday night during the Sprint Center's first concert. He said it was pretty quiet. There were reports of two car break-ins and one stolen auto, and he thinks they were reported toward the north end of the Loop. That's on par with a typical night.
The police had extra officers in the area, and the city had coordinated all the stoplights, so traffic moved pretty smoothly, reported Sims, who said he was "pleasantly surprised."

Er, why can't they do this every night? Seems like it would make things a lot easier the other nights of the year.

Why because, if they coordinated all the stoplights every night, the bicycle patrol couldn't catch the car thieves that work during off peak opportunity hours.

yeah, because car thieves are careful to stop at every red light -

Especially when they don't want to attract attention from the old man learning to do wheelies on his bicycle.

I bet there was a blackout around the midtown neighborhoods when they have the police consolidated in one place.
Just like when the police were at Westport on Fridays and Saturday nights.
You call 911 and the police wouldn't come for 3 to 4 hours if one had a problem.
Got to protect those drunks.
