It's from Macon, Mo., up in the north-central part of the state. A couple goes on Social Security, but their checks go to another man, who "handles their finances." He pays their rent, sure, but then embezzles most of their money.
He gets their food at a local charity pantry. Not that it was enough -- the wife was seen salvaging food out of neighbors' trash cans. The husband did a little repair work on lawnmowers for $20 to $25 -- which he then turned over to his "caretaker," who keeps it for himself.
The good news? The caretaker and his wife have pleaded guilty. Sentencing is set for this summer.
