7-Eleven clerk opens fire on armed robbers

From Christine Vendel:

A Kansas City convenience store clerk fired at two gunmen who robbed the business Monday night.

Witnesses saw two men dressed in black with their faces covered enter the 7-Eleven at 319 E. 63rd St. about 11:42 p.m. The clerk said one pointed a gun at him while the other emptied the cash register. One of the robbers stole a bottle of Crown Royal and two cartons of cigarettes. He knocked over some liquor bottles, which broke on the floor.

As the robbers prepared to leave, the clerk pulled a gun and fired five shots. He wasn’t sure if he hit anyone. Police said they have not found anyone suffering unexplained gunshot wounds.

Step 1: The clerk needs to take target practice until proficient.
Step 2: Then transfer him out to the Wornall Rd. store that gets hit once a week.

This store is in my neighborhood. I'm surprised that it isn't robbed more often.

man 7-11 isn't a safe place to work is it?

OK, can someone explain to me why convenience stores don't have better security measures in place? They're such common targets, yet nothing ever seems to change.

Marvin, what security measures do you think they should have?

Well, I won't be stopping there on my way home tonight. Sheesh. Brookside must have a record number of shootings this year.

Marvin,

Security measures cost money the 7-11's of the world don't want to spend. More money than they're probably losing on these robberies.

Kudos to the clerk. Don't be sheep! Get better training, so next time you hit your mark!!!

Isn't this the same store where a clerk was killed back in 01 or 02?

Elrond, Either I'm not reading your post correctly or you seem to have the idea that there's all kinds of money avaible for these small convience stores that they should provide the best of the best security? How much money do you think these fast stops make? It's like you would expect a car wash to provide you an armed officer 24/7. Most of the time a company would find it better to just close up shop and move some where else.

Quit looking at others to blame when there's only one person to blame here and that is the person who chose to rob the place.

I wished this guy would of hit them and killed them, you don't know how bad I wished that. However, I'm not in favor of arming these folks that work there. Once it's known fact you are armed, then the robbers will shoot you on sight, without 2nd thought. You are a dead person and all you wanted to do is take your $8.50 an hour and buy your kids some food. I'd rather the robbers assume you are unarmed and hope they have some sense of decency and take the money and run.

Well that's my nickels worth anyway.

Back in the 80's Cowboy moved from the 7-11 on 57th & Troost over to 63rd & Oak.
That guy was crazy enough to shoot some SOB..

Ya notice how many "bad" area's Quick Trip's are in? They used to give "combat" pay to work on 39th & Warwick.

in2ropin,

No, I was responding to Marvin's post above that asked, "OK, can someone explain to me why convenience stores don't have better security measures in place?"

Answer, its expensive. And the cost of adding security measures is probably a lot more than they are losing to the thieves. So, to them, its an economic decision.

And generally, I agree with what you wrote in your post.

"there's only one person to blame here and that is the person who chose to rob the place."

Agree 100%

Though if I worked at a 24-hour convenience store, I would want to arm myself.

in2ropin,

You said, "I'd rather the robbers assume you are unarmed and hope they have some sense of decency and take the money and run."

On that, I will disagree.

These criminals have already established they have no regard for the law. One must assumme they won't have any regard for your life.

Hoping they will have some sense of decency, in my opinion, is a bad gamble.

Yea, Elrond I'd have to admit it's a hard decision to make, if it was up to me. What are the odds of being shot by some idiot that has no concience, vs someone just wanting a quick $20.00 and run down the road.

I'd have to say if it was one my kids that worked there, I'd rather the slime of the of the city know that she/he isn't armed. Of course I wouldn't let one of my kids work in a place like that.

I sure enjoy being able to stop at a 7-11 or QT and run in quickly for a coke or something, but at the price of someone's life???????

btw: QT at 43& Main obviously makes plenty of money, since they do employee off-duty's. I think that has to be one of the busiest QT's in the city too.

All the coward cops are hanging out at the Wornall and 72nd QuikTrip getting their freebies. Drive by there at any given time of day. It's a friggin pig troph.
