A Blue Springs man allegedly spent two years training a 12-year-old girl to be a dominatrix before selling videotaped sex encounters with her to others.

The girl’s mother, who lived in the same home, allegedly gave her approval — and now prosecutors say she’s the first parent nationwide to be charged with commercial sex trafficking of her own minor child in a human trafficking case.

Federal prosecutors in Kansas City announced indictments this afternoon against the couple. Most of the crimes occurred while the couple lived in Blue Springs, authorities said. The girl escaped in 2005 and ran away, they said.

Todd B. Barkau, 35, and the victim’s 44-year-old mother are charged in the seven-count indictment unsealed today. Barkau was arrested Friday in western New York. The mother was arrested Friday in Texas.

This is actually a pretty rare case, the U.S. Attorney's Office reports. Most sex-trafficking cases DON'T have the actual Mom or Dad participating in pimping out the kid.

This is just very sad. I hope that this girl gets all the help and counseling that she needs to get past all this. They should imprison her mother and take from her everything that life has to offer. The guy is just a low-life and needs to be incarcerated for life or put on death-row. But, the mother -- she should really pay for putting her own child in this situation.

This whole thing just sickens me. I gather there were problems arresting the couple as they kept moving so much.

I just hope the young lady can eventually have a normal life. The adults should get life in prison. My understanding is that any type of child abuse (especially sexual) is the lowest type of crime as far as prisoners are concerned. Their fellow inmates will make sure that justice will be truly followed in prison. Should the couple get life - they will experience a living hell unimaginable to us for the rest of their lives. And they deserve it!

I personally think the whole thing is terribly sad and insanely wrong. The girls' life is messed up and it makes no difference what ethnic background she is from. Wrong is wrong and in these types of cases, there are no gray areas. The adults should be punished and they will be at some point even if it's on the other side. I'm personally glad I am not the one that has to pay for those sins. The Lord have mercy on their souls!
