They permanently took away his license in 1995. (After it had been suspended 45 other times.) Since that's worked so well, maybe they should consider an alternative punishment, such as throwing him into a deep, dark hole. Amazingly, in all this time, the guy has never hurt anybody while behind the wheel.

Disgusting. Does it take a dead victim for the legal system to treat this guy as a serious danger to others?
Had he been busted 45 times in 20 years for walking down the street toking on a joint, he'd be in the pen for life.
Which would make us a whole lot safer, right?

Some drunks are just better drivers.
(Sarcasm ends here)

Yeah, but I have to play devil's advocate here. "Throw him in a deep, dark hole, BUT he's never hurt anyone." Hmmmmm. Let's see, we can barely punish people who do hurt (or kill) others, but we can't punish people who never have severely enough. That makes sense.
He COULD have hurt someone, so he's a criminal. Brilliant. Our roads are full of people who, clean, sober, bright eyed and focused, could kill someone else at any time. Lock them all up.

Grassy: That's a good point -- it's probably better to try rehab instead of just throwing a person away.
I guess I was just frustrated that he's been in trouble of dozens of times, but he still keeps engaging in behavior that has a very high risk of hurting innocent people.

They should have someone that follows him around and replaces his car with a big wheel whenever he goes out to drink. :)

This guy has shown impecable skills at the art of drunken driving!!! Kudos!! 13 DUI's, plus who knows how many other times he as driven drunk and not been caught and he hasn't hurt even 1 person!! That takes talent. Now hopefully he will dry up in jail for a few years.

This is why they need a "drunk" lane on every highway. And a "drunk" path through neighborhoods. If people are drunk, they stay in those lanes.
I'll propose that when I'm nominated for Pres.

13 DUI's and 45 suspensions!!!!!!!!!
Give me a break.
This represents what is wrong with our legal system. No way this should ever happen. Solve these types of instances and you can start doing away with Czech Points.
1st Offense: 30 day Suspension $1,000 fine
2nd Oddense: 1 year in Jail, $10,000 fine
3rd Offense: 5 years in Jail
4th Offense: Life (No Parole)
Think before you drink and drive.

Walk into any neighborhood bar and look around. Half the people sitting there are just like him. Bar drunks who later drive home.

Lock this loser up for life before he takes one,Maybe you or me!

Considering the relatively few number of DUIs I have compared to the number of times driving drunk (approx. 5,000) and the number of injuries (zero). I'm here to say...it can be done.
Posted by: Lucky Me! | Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 10:15 AM
As long as there's the "he's never hurt anyone" syndrome, you can expect a steady toll of deaths caused by drunk drivers.
This guy needs to be in jail, and should have been there years ago.
The judges who've let him escape with trivial consequences for his previous violations of the law should be removed from the bench.
Finally, it's long past time to hold judges accountable for civil liability--read huge lawsuits--when the disregard the public safety in releasing criminals with short or no jail time.

Good posts from 'any bar in town' and ' lucky me'. As long as there are bars with cars ,there will be drunk driving. I build a bar or club that stays open until the early hours of the morning so I can proudly say I produce drunks and made lots of money doing it. And by the way I don't care about them when they leave, knowing they could maim or kill themselves or others. Hey I am just a guy trying to make a buck.

Yes, sober drivers can kill other people. That's the inescapable consequence of travelling at speed.
Add impaired reflexes and judgement to the inherent risks, and you get a higher rate of injury and death from impaired drivers.
THAT is why there are laws against driving impaired. The fact that some people have been lucky enough not to happen in this guy's path isn't a good argument for ignoring the more common occurance of injury and death, not to speak of property damage, lost wages, etc, caused by impaired drivers.

But was he wearing a seatbelt?

The seriousness of the "drunk driving" problem has always been highly exagerated. Alcohol does not improve your driving any more than marijuana is a vitamin. But...Most people who are charged with a DUI are not actually dangerous -- at least not more impaired than the cigarette-smoking, cel-phone-talking, radio-tuning, coffee-swilling average driver.
By definition, for example, any driver stopped at a checkpoint is not driving improperly -- or the checkpoint would be unnecessary.
Bottom line is that our Puritan Prohibitionist souls really, really want alcohol and drugs to be dangerous to society -- and the facts be damned. In the 30 years since the presumption of intoxication has dropped from .15 to .08 -- costing billions of dollars in insurance rates, lost jobs and manufactured felons -- the impact on actual public safety has been non-existent.
Yet politically correct fanaticism demands that we do more of the wrong thing, lest we be forced to face those inconvenient facts.
