AP: Truckers with health problems endanger other drivers
The AP has gotten its hands on an upcoming study from the GAO on traffic safety. Specifically, the study says there are a lot of truckers with serious medical issues who shouldn't be driving, but are. Which can lead to fatal crashes.
There are a few proposals floating around that would theoretically help catch unfit truckers. But some say all that really needs to be done is to enforce the existing rules. Snip:
"Do you enjoy your clothing and house? Without the truck driver you would have none of it," said Gary Hull, 52, a trucker for a Louisiana company, as he drove from Edinburg, Texas, to Mansfield, La. "Our economy is based on the truck. People don't understand the ramifications of making it more restrictive for truck drivers to drive."
