Charges filed in Dwight Mayhugh murder

Mayhugh was fatally wounded during a bank robbery on Feb. 24, 2006, when two men approached him outside the UMB bank at 79th and Wornall. Federal prosecutors now say they've got one of the men responsible: Iralee E. French Jr., 21, of St. Louis. (This happens just a week or so after authorities canvassed a KC neighborhood looking for leads.)

UPDATE: Christine says the other suspect is in custody in St. Louis.

From U.S. Attorney John Wood's official release:

According to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, French and another person took a taxi cab to the area of United Missouri Bank, 7901 Wornall, Kansas City. They were waiting in the bank's underground parking garage. French was wearing all black clothing and was carrying a Mossberg pump shotgun, the affidavit says. It was still early in the morning, and the bank was not yet open for business.

As French waited, Mayhugh pulled into the parking garage. French allegedly came out from his hiding place and fired one shot from the Mossberg shotgun, striking Mayhugh, who was still sitting in his car, in the right neck and shoulder area. French walked over to Mayhugh, the affidavit says, took the keys off his side and led the bank guard to the doorway of the bank. French allegedly took Mayhugh into the bank because he wanted him to open the safes within the bank. Mayhugh was unable to open the safes, according to the affidavit, and French and another person left the bank, taking Mayhugh's vehicle.

Mayhugh was transported to a hospital for treatment, but died from his gunshot wounds the next day on Feb. 25, 2006.

Did I miss the part where the cab driver called police and said, "Hey, there is a guy dressed in all black, whom I took to a bank. By the way, there's another dude with him, and...oh, what's that other little detail--yeah, HE HAD A SHOTGUN."????

They must have not printed that part.
