Brownback: Don't send Gitmo inmates to Leavenworth
There's been some talk that, depending on who wins the presidential election, the U.S. might shut down its facility for enemy combatants in Guantanamo Bay. Sam Brownback reminded the Senate yesterday that he strongly opposes sending any detainees to Fort Leavenworth, the Times reports:
“The maximum-security wing at the Disciplinary Barracks is near capacity with military prisoners, and Fort Leavenworth does not have the ability to house and feed the large number of personnel necessary to secure a detainee population,” Brownback said.
“Leavenworth cannot sufficiently separate detainees from the rest of the prison population, which would violate laws and policies against co-mingling."

When reached for comment the President said, "Keep up the good work Brownie!"

Personally I think Kansas needs all the tourists they can get.

Why would he be concerned about the legality of how we treat those detainees NOW? Most have been in jail without a trial for years, no point in trying to pretend to care about justice this late in the game.

Brownback is useless.

I live in Leavenworth and work at Ft. Leavenworth. Granted, we take our chances with having so many prisons around already. But I, for one, truly do not want to worry about the safety of everyone around here if we take on the prisoners from Gitmo. I completely agree with SEN Brownback on this one.
