So... if it was INERT, why did they take it away from him??? I mean, not, like, give it back to his mom and tell her to keep it at home? I'm a little befuddled here.

Yeah, what was the school so freaked about? doesn't everyone have a totally authentic grenade paperweight? LOL
The teacher probably was concerned that it might be real and the kid not know it. There are a lot of freaky people in Kentucky and his folks, could have been 2 of them.
