3 hurt in Midtown apartment arson

From The Star: Fire was reported about 2:20 p.m. in a nine-story building at 525 East Armour Blvd., Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Joe Vitale said.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames in a second-story unit with a woman inside. They carried the woman, who had suffered smoke inhalation, to safety, and she was taken to a hospital by ambulance, Vitale said. Two other occupants who made it out of the building on their own also were taken to hospitals for smoke inhalation, Vitale said.

Investigators determined someone lit multiple fires in an entryway just outside the apartment door, Vitale said. A sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading to other units. Vitale said damage was estimated at $20,000.
