Just heard back from Yellow Cab -- there will not be a Holiday Cab this year because of limited sponsorship, spokeswoman Nancy Cipolla says. For the uninitiated and homebound, Holiday Cab was a (mostly) free service that toted local partygoers home from the bars. Last year, ironically, was the program's 25th anniversary. Cipolla says they hope to revive the program next year.

Maybe a little grant money can be spared from the Check points? That have been proven time & time again to be a waste of money & time.

True dat JewwellsP, but the cops won't give up the easy overtime for anybody.

I can understand the need to postpone. Everyone's suffering.

I don't see what's the big deal about making people be responsible for their own actions. Besides, those holiday cab rides are bogus anyway. The driver is paid a pre-determined set amount by the corporate sponsor. Regardless how far they take the riders. Several of these drivers were stopping and making people get out so they can return to the bars and pick up another fare.

Nationally, approx. 35% of all fatality accidents are alcohol related. In Missouri, we are at about 43%, while Kansas is about 35%. If DUI checkpoints stop just ONE drunk driver from killing themselves or someone else, aren't they worth it? Or have we finally put a price on someone elses life?
I'm saddened to hear that the Holiday Cab program will not be there to help this year. Who knows how many lives it has saved in the last 25 years.

Checkpoints = easy overtime? Since when is standing outside in the freezing cold for hours on end, trying to stop the drunks from driving on your streets, easy? Get real. I suppose that seat belt grants, hazardous driving/aggressive driving, Click It or Ticket grants aren't worth it either, then?

What DUI offenders really need is more penalties for their actions. How about making them use one of those breath testing things in their car before they can drive. Or not letting the repeat offenders own cars. Maybe then they'll get the idea.

Guns kill more people.
Posted by: | Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 08:19 PM
Whoa there, people using guns kill other people. And, statistically, yes, more people die by firearm than by drunk driver's. BUT, more people die in car crashes. And, the number of DUI deaths, as a total of all vehicle fatalities, has dropped due to the efforts of the courts, law enforcement, MADD, etc. The number of total deaths in car accidents has dropped slightly, also, due to safer vehicles, seat belts, airbags, and enforcement. At the same time, the number of gun deaths has remained about the same over the last 25 years, annually. All this, while the number of people in the US has gone up, more guns were manufactured, more cars were made, and more people are driving.

Statistically, doctors are far more dangerous than either guns or alcohol but it would be rather silly to suggest outlawing them wouldn't it?
Posted by: jrs | Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 09:40 PM
Well, no, because there are a whole lot of doctors who SAVE people, and make them feel better.

I think the point being made above is that things such as the Holiday Cab program have probably helped reduce DUI accidents over the last 25 years. Statistics don't show the number of people saved unfortunately

Good !! People need to take personal responsiblity to take care of themselves and not drink too much if they are going to drive. Adults shouldn't have to have baby sitters to take them home.

Guns also save people's lives, even though people like you tend to omit that fact or refuse to believe it. However, since we gun owners know someone like you won't change your mind, please refrain from calling the police in the future when your safety or your life is on the line. We wouldn't want your life to be saved by someone with a "gun", would we?
A link for your education, with references to source material. So don't waste our time with "I don't accept it because it's from a pro-gun website."

Great! Another reason to stay home on New Year's--more drunks will be behind the wheel.

Unfortunately we have too many Americans that do not take personal responsibility for their actions. That is the entire reason we need to have rules, laws, law enforcement, judges, lawyers, and the entire judicial system.

My mother and sister were killed by a drunk driver. Maybe they could have been that "one".
