That's according to the New York Times, which says that Leavenworth -- and Camp Pendleton in California -- were both recently scouted as potential holding places for the Gitmo prisoners, despite a huge outcry from Kansas-based politicos. Sam Brownback, for one, has been a leading opponent. Snip:
“The place isn’t set up for it,” Mr. Brownback continued. “Leavenworth doesn’t have an exterior fence. It’s a small facility, about eight miles by eight miles, and a train runs through the property. It could be easily breached by someone bringing in a bomb or something like that.”

So if Levenworth is that unsecure, what have we been doing sending the worst of the millitary's criminals there for the last several decades?
Weak arguments by people who just don't want these prisoners to be scrutinized or to receive the due process that anyone caught in the American legal system deserves. It's what seperates us from the radical fundamentalist Muslum dictatorships that want to do us harm. Every time we whittle down another freedom, we're letting them win just a little bit more.

There are two prisons in Leavenworth. The disciplinary barracks and Leavenworth penn. One is on base the other is off base. The USDB was just built, I couldn't imagine that they don't have the security. The old USDB probably couldn't hold simple jack.

Let them come I say, the American Prisoners will take out these terrorists faster than any judicial system. I bet most won't even see a court date.

Putting a couple hundred Al Qida inmates in the Kansas City metro will put this area high on the target list.

As secure as the prison already is....I dont see any increased risk of them here or Guantanamo Bay. They ain't getting out and even in the remote possiblity that they do....they dont have any weapons or assistence.
Bill_the_Kat, target list for what? Who's list?
Think about it differently. Dont you think if our enemies had the facilities to launch a missle at us, they would have already done it? And, now, wouldn't they target somewhere else to avoid killing some of thier own fighters in the KC metro area.
In the Vietnam war, the US military did not drop bombs in the Hanio Hilton because our POWs were there. That was the safest place to be.

A train runs through Leavenworth! How about 25 trains a day? Brownback is about as smart as his hero Dubya! Trouble is, he may be the next governor of Kansas.

"Every time we whittle down another freedom, we're letting them win just a little bit more."
I am not aware of any American who is having freedom's whittled down, by keeping someone who wants to kill us locked away.

You forget that our enemy has absolutely no regard for human life. They will not launch a rescue mission. The fighters will come here and blow themselves up along with everyone else.

Thato, no American is directly deprived of rights by keeping the detainees locked up. However, the point is the miscarriage of justice by holding someone without indictment. The Constitution is pretty clear on that. If the govt can do that to them, how long will it be before they do it to you?
If we cannot uphold our own constitution, we sure cant tell the rest of the world how to be "free".
I think it is appropriate to quote Martin Luther King today who said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

......and some of those trains probably have highly radioactive, spent nuclear power plant fuel rods.
