This is that story from McCune, Kan., where the local mayor is facing criminal charges because he reportedly shot two dogs. The dogs had been chasing kids, and the sheriff wasn't doing anything about it, the mayor has said. Now the Joplin Globe has an interview with the dogs' owner, who says his animals -- a German shepherd and a terrier mix -- were already tied up when they were killed.
According to a police report and the mayor’s own account, Call drove to Wahl’s house at 612 Oak St. and shot the dogs with a 9 mm rifle as they lay on the sidewalk outside the house. Call said a neighbor of Wahl’s notified him that the dogs were chasing some children playing nearby.
In a Globe interview last week, Call said he pulled up in front of the house in his van and aimed his semiautomatic rifle out the window at the animals, using a nearby fence as a backstop. He said he fired “five or six” shots at both dogs, striking them in the head. He later disposed of the dogs’ bodies at property he owns.

If they were chasing kids, they should've been locked up by animal control, not shot.
If they were tied up, then not only should they *not* have been shot, it is also the case that this mayor is pretty subhuman. Anyone tried that crap with my dog, I'd let her off leash after the bastard. Let's see how well he shoots with his gun arm torn up.

I'm just surprised that they are actually prosecuting for this. It's an actual crime. The perp actually did harm.

Just the simple fact that he discharged a weapon in the city limits around houses and citizens, is a crime. He's no better than the average citizen who commits this type of crime. The mayor should know better and he should know how to handle dogs that the community complains about. 5 or 6 shots??? Now that's a little excessive. What if one of them lil brats that started taunting the dogs came running out of nowhere and he shot one of them???? Mr Mayor you should have made better decisions than to try to take the law into your own hands. You are not excluded from following the LAW! Dog owner, you should make sure that your animals are put up when you are away from the home. My dog got out once while I was at work, that was the end of his being independent until I returned. He wasn't happy about being indoors while I was gone but I'm sure he would not like the other option if he got out again and neither would I. If you know your animals can escape put them up until you have time to supervise them.
