Gunstuff

From the original cutline: Inspecting a pellet gun, closely resembling an Army-issue M-1, .30-caliber carbine, is Ronald Kossenjan, a Leawood patrolman. On the desk are other toy guns and radios police took from five youths playing soldier late Saturday night. (Star photo by O.D. Smith)

It's kind of a scary thought...my little brother and I used to roam the entire neighborhood for hours playing cops and robbers, or cowboys and indians...carrying very real looking guns.

What's scary? Guns were always a part of American life. Kids taking guns to school for rifle practice after school, or going hunting later. WTF is wrong with kids playing with BB guns in Leawood? Caption should be: Beginning of the end of common sense, welcome your new nanny state overlords, circa 1970.

I had a very real looking Mattel Thompson when I was a kid that made the same rat a tat sounds that a Thompson makes. I was always picked first when we were playing army. Most of the dads gave us real army gear to play with too. We looked pretty silly, actually....a bunch of 8-9yr olds running around the neighborhood with helmets and gear 5 times too big.

My dad passed on a cowboy 6 shooter toy to me and the brother. It was actually made from metal, had fake (solid metal) bullets that you could "load".

...honestly, in hindsight, it probably wasn't a great idea to let kids run around with something that likely to scare the bejesus out of the neighbors.

Anarchanon when you were doing though, I bet your neightbors knew it was a toy. Today you never know.

Fascinating. One article here is about a principle getting a ticket for kids actually playing outside (and making noise) and this article about kids toy guns being seized while playing army. I don't know about today's society. I'm surprised the police didn't arrest them for terrorist activities - obviously they were practicing a military strike somewhere - sheesh.

I was just curious, old Ronald is still around. Lives in Perfect Village.

Toy guns and radios? He took away their radios?
