Santa Muerte

Muerte

And while the Mexican government won't admit it, The AP has found several cases where officials destroyed altars and shrines paying homage to Santa Muerte. People who worship the saint say it's been misunderstood -- a lot of the followers are people who live in bad neighborhoods and want divine protection:

Following Roman Catholic tradition, worshippers often place offerings of food, candy or flowers at the saint's altar. Most ask the Santa Muerte to keep them alive in crime-ridden neighborhoods.
