Charges filed in Takiya Love homicide from Thursday

Pervis Smith Jr. is facing charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. From The Star:

Jackson County prosecutors today charged a 24-year-old man with involuntary manslaughter after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the chest while he was trying to clear his gun.

Prosecutors also charged Pervis D. Smith Jr., with armed criminal action in the death of Takiya L. Love, 23, Thursday afternoon at their home in the 2000 block of Walrond Avenue.

Witnesses told police Smith was handling his gun when Love asked him to “stop playing with it and put it up,” according to court records. Smith ejected six rounds from the gun then — apparently thinking the gun was empty — pointed it in Love’s direction and pulled the trigger.

After Love was shot, her sister and Smith drove her to a hospital, where she died. Police arrested Smith at the hospital. He told police the shooting was an accident and “was very distraught,” while talking to detectives, according to court records.
