From Don Bradley: A Belton man allegedly stabbed the family dog and threatened a woman hours before he drove the wrong way and crashed on U.S. 71, killing himself and another man.
Authorities had charged Nicholas L. Schilling, 26, with four counts relating to the incidents early Wednesday. Later in the day, he fled and was chased by police. The chase ended when Schilling’s 2007 Ford Focus crossed the U.S. 71 median, putting him southbound in the northbound lanes.
His car crashed head-on into a pickup truck at 4:17 p.m. near the line between Cass and Bates counties.
The driver of the pickup, Joe Nowlin, 40, of Oklahoma, also was killed. His son, Cayden, 14, was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
