I'm curious how they proved he was faking? Did someone just run up and kick him in the shin?

That reminds me of the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels when Steve Martin faked paralysis to when the womans heart, he was surprised by his competition pretending to be a world renowned doctor. I can't do it justice, heres a youtube clip.

Whatever happened to when I was in the army, people would either say they were gay or that they found a new pacifist religion that keeps them from wanting to kill. If you would like I could go up there and paralyze him, that way he won't be lying anymore.
