Cities plan DUI checkpoints this weekend

Law enforcement agencies plan sobriety checkpoints this weekend in Kansas City and Merriam.

| Bob Cronkleton

Their announcements follow:

From KCPD:

The Kansas City Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on the weekend of July 10-12 at a location in Kansas City that is known for occurrence of DUI related crashes or DUI arrests.

During this operation there will be signs placed in advance of the checkpoint site and officers will be on the street directing traffic. Motorists will be directed to a location where an officer can conduct a brief check to determine if the motorist should be delayed longer. If not, the motorist will be delayed only a very brief period of time and will then be furnished with written material about drunk driving.

From Merriam PD and JOCO Sheriff:

A program to identify intoxicated drivers will be conducted this month by the Merriam Police Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Officers will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in the city of Merriam in the late evening hours Friday and early morning hours Saturday.

Drivers suspected of being intoxicated will be given brief sobriety tests and those drivers who are confirmed to be impaired will be arrested.

Efforts will be made not to severely interrupt the flow of traffic. Citizen’s patience and cooperation will assist with this important safety effort.

Why not just sticky this to the top.. seems like there is a DUI check point every weekend

Gotta pay for the new coffee machine and redbox at the station somehow.

Shouldn't the headline read, "Cities plan ASSAULTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS OF CITIZENS IN POST-CONSTITUTIONAL AMERICA!!!!!!!!?"

However, I've never understood whether this rhetorical spewing of "Post-Constitutional America" means the period after the formation of the Constitution or if it means a period after which the Constitution ceases to exist.

It wouldnt' be compelling without all the exclamation points, though.

Cool! Just like they did in Iraq. When do they start house to house searches?

The founders of America would have outlawed checkpoints if the police state tactic had been invented back then.
