Lee's Summit police warn residents of scams

Police warn that people are targeting Lee's Summit residents with telephone scams relating to their water bills.

The underlying story of the scam is that there is a problem with the customer's payment or check. To fix the problem, the caller asks for financial and personal information so that the water service is not shut off.

From the Lee's Summit PD:

As with most metro communities Lee’s Summit residents are also experiencing a rash of scam telephone calls seeking personal information related to their water bills. Though the scenario may change from call to call the main story line of the scammer involves a problem with the customer’s payment or check.

The scammer then requests information about account numbers or other personal information for payment to ensure the customer’s water service is not shut off. The personal information requested is such that if given out it could provide access to the customers banking or credit card accounts.

Residents serviced by Lee’s Summit Water Utilities should be aware that customer service representatives will not attempt to collect credit card information by calling it’s customers.

Customers who wish to make water utility payments by telephone will be directed to call the Secured Telephone Payment System at 816-969-4636 or be directed to the on-line payment system at www.cityofls.net.

If you feel you have been a victim of a telephone scam and have given out personal information related to your accounts please contact the Lee’s Summit Police Department directly at 816-969-1710.
