Topeka squabbles over police copter

The city's controversial police helicopter program was grounded last year after a crash destroyed one of the department's two aircraft. But a newly proposed budget would provide for 1,800 hours of flight time, including $438,265 for salaries and benefits and $520,702 for other operating costs.

I work 2,000 hours per year.

So it will cost ONE MILLION DOLLARS to provide a policeman in a helecopter for one shift for one year.

Wouldn't the money be better spent providing 20 police officers walking beats?
That would be an additional 4 policemen on each shift for a year.

I want a helicopter. Or better yet... a ROFLcopter.
