From Christine Vendel: A car slammed into a fire truck that was heading back to its fire station early today, killing two passengers in the car.
The driver, a 24-year-old man, suffered critical injuries in the 4:15 a.m. crash in the 3200 block of Indiana Avenue. The mother of the driver, 47-year-old Crystal Lewis, was riding in the front seat and died at the scene. Malinda Reliford, 32, was in the back seat and also died.
One firefighter was transported to a hospital after he complained of pain to his ribs. He was later released.
Police said the truck had finished a call and had turned northbound on Indiana from Linwood Boulevard. The truck driver saw a southbound Chevrolet Camaro speeding and weaving into the northbound lane. The car was “heading right toward them,” Sgt. Bill Mahoney said.
