Happy Caturday to all.
Our friends, the Raiders, are up to their old tricks. Let's hope this doesn't become a distraction...
Napa cops reopen probe of Raiders fight. Napa police have reopened their investigation into a Raiders training camp melee this month that left assistant coach Randy Hanson with a broken jaw, reportedly when he was attacked by head coach Tom Cable.

Morning folks!
I can't wait till this is available at KFC. Basically it's a bacon sandwich that uses fried chicken as bread. :)

Poor Adam Lambert, Something horrible happened to him on stage the other day. Basically a fan tossed a marital aide onto the stage while he was performing.

Good morning, guys!

Well! A busy day for all, I see!
We worked our butts off in the yard and have little to show for it. Dang those weeds! First weekend since my back went out and I hardly feel I made a dent in what needs to be done.
One good thing: We found out Lowe's delivers. Instead of buying 12 landscaping bricks at a time, week after week after week after week, we finally ordered 80 today. Finally, hopefully, we can finish up the patio.
Then we went to Soil Service to get some plants. We discovered that dirt, in its normal state, simply does not stay in place when it rains, oddly enough. Between that, and gift plants of liriope from a friend, hopefully we can hold back the occasional mudfest when it rains. Meh.
So - the beloved made a salad out of butter leaf lettuce (my fave) and is grilling some steaks as we speak, while we warm up some mashed taters from McGonigles. I think I'll pour another delightful beverage, sit down, and put my feet up now. Oh yah - this is life.
Posted by: Patty PV | Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 06:22 PM
Watch out for the liriope if it likes where you put it the dang plant will take over the world. However it and many of the bulbs that come up now and bloom in the spring like grape hyachints, spelling is baddd, can be used to outline a garden bed where you wish to do something special like fertilizing in winter or early spring.
I used to use it to show where my miniture daffodils were so I would not dig them in error.

Fluffy has an atitude. Mr Cuddles is a wimp. But both are so cute.
Posted by: AH | Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 07:38 PM
Agreed, on liriope and kitties, AH. I plan to use it to outline, only. It spreads like kudzu I think. But it will be awhile before I need to worry about it.
Watching Pirates of the Caribbean - jolly good fun!

R2, I used that as an avitar on one of my other blogs for 2 years. I love that poster. There is actually a website with it on it that tells who fluffy is and how they came about the poster.

When people used to ask me why I chose that as an avatar, I would tell them that it was like me, cute, fluffy and irritated..LOL

As Flip Wilson used to say, "The devil made me do it!"
A Cleveland barber, upset a store's beef jerky made him and his dog sick, goes back and robs the store. Police didn't find that reasoning sufficient, and the barber has been arrested. No report on the dog.
Father Michael Jude Fay, the Connecticut pastor serving 3 years for stealing more than a million dollars from his parish, has died in prison. His death occured the morning after a judge refused to dismiss a suit against the diocese by a former bookkeeper at St. John Roman Catholic Church. Bethany D'Erario says she was harassed for exposing Fay's crimes.

CBS news last night aired a piece about Lt. Col. Darrel Vandeveld, a military prosecutor at Gitmo, who revealed evidence flaws to the defense and was given an unsatisfactory review, effectively ending his career. I guess that's the downside of working with integrity and following the rules.
In other news, this week CSKC featured a thread about how police identified a murder victim, even though her fingers and teeth had been removed. They had plenty to work with.

From Wisconsin, of course: A former FBI crime analyst testifies at a murder trial that throwing the weighted body of the victim into Lake Geneva tells much about her killer. My BS-o-meter is going off. I'm calling the psychic hotline.

I went and saw "500 Days of Summer" this afternoon -- what a good, good movie. It's a little sad, but very thoughtful.

I bought a wooden box to hold some paints and brushes. Now that I am trying to consolidate what I have I am finding I have 4 brushes of every size and only one that I really like to use.
Does anyone know of a place besides some of the art stores that sell wooden carrying cases like the old carpenters tool boxes? I have one but it weights 35 pounds without anything in it. Wonderful looking case but built with inch and half inch wood.
Posted by: AH | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 07:08 PM
I don't know -- it seems like the big stores only sell the sturdy plastic kind anymore.
Posted by: James Hart | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 07:14 PM
AH, would a tackle box do in a pinch?
Or an old-style briefcase or doctor's bag, is the only thing I can think of. Unless you can find an unfinished box like that at a place like Michael's or Hobby Lobby.
146: We are foodies. Any post of mine that talks about food, be forewarned. I had the pleasure of visiting Emeril Lagasse's restaurant in New Orleans, the Delmonico, for one New Year's Eve (pre-Katrina.) The maitre d' invited me to the kitchen to torch some creme brulee (after I had consumed a 7-course meal, with wine pairings.) I wisely declined, since holding a torch at that point might have invalidated their insurance policy, and just stood in the kitchen to watch the staff finish up service. It made Hell's Kitchen look like McDonald's. There were so many servers . . . so may of them just finishing the dessert service, but others still finishing the last courses. I was gobsmacked.
The best thing that I can say is that I worked my share of holidays, weekend nights, weekend days . . . but it's a dim memory now. And someday, it will be for you, too.
Posted by: Patty PV | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 07:21 PM
I agree about the weekend/holiday business -- God can only make one person suffer so much!
Posted by: James Hart | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 07:27 PM
I think the very, very, very worst holiday I had to work (I had three part-time jobs at the time, no time off on any off them) was during the Bicentennial Celebration. That sucked. Major-league. Big time.
OK. It was 1976. I have now identified myself as an Old Broad.
The night of July 4 that year, one of my part-time jobs was on a radio station, high on a hill in Turner, Kansas. That night I got to see all the fireworks, city-wide. There were a couple of radio stations in the building. I shared a bottle of wine with a coworker while we watched the fireworks. It was awesome.
And we were abover the treeline of the ancient trees that housed thousands of ticks the size of pitbulls. So we escaped unscathed.
But - still - it sucks to work, when everone else is in party mode.

My least favorite was from two years ago -- ironically, I actually *volunteered* to work a weekend shift. And then my family changed our extended-family Christmas to that date.
Posted by: James Hart | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 08:04 PM
OUCH! I bet no amount of explanation could cure that bit of family ill will. Sorry, James.
I saw my work life stretch before me the first night I baby-sat for a couple that had never left their kids with a babysitter. It was Saturday night. I was well aware that my family was just a short distance away, enjoying snacks while they sat in front of the black-and-white TV, watching the generic shows of the day after dinner, while I schlepped after two toddlers
The toddlers were nearly nodding off when I mentioned it was time for bath and pajamas and bed. And then - they began to scream. And scream and scream. And scream.
At that very moment, their helicopter mom decided to phone in from the restaurant to see how things were going. Despite my perky assurances, I'm convinced she thought I was beating her children, and I expected to see the police at the door within minutes.
Somehow the night finally ended . . . and that was the only time I babysat for screamers.
Later I studed Mendel's peas, and discovered that there is something to genetics.

I am back. Tried to stuff things in the container I purchased. If I put the paints in no room for the multitude of brushes. Paints have been in a plastic tote box but brushes in a soft bag. A fishing box will not work because most are not long enough for the brushes and most are not well put together. The fishing boxes I have seen recently would never have held 1/8 of the stuff in my dads old tackle box. I think it is time to rearrange the garage and perhaps purchase a heater for there that would keep the temperature above zero.
Tried taking only what I thought I wanted with me but everything I NEEDED was at home. Decisions I hate.
Food I love. Made a quick tomato herb pasta sauce over basil penne for dinner but forgot to rinse the pasta to remove the salt I added to the cooking water. I only rinse if the pasta has holes and I prefer flat pasta but you use what you have.

Slept with the bedroom window by my head open last night. I almost had to grab another blanket. I realize it will become warm again but I keep thinking about cold weather. If it is warm this winter like forecasted probably will have more snow than normal. If colder I will just find out how many blankets I actually have in this house.

Speaking of food I when food shopping this afternoon and really looked at the food in the dollar section. Some of the brands are ones that I used to buy as treats at the gourmet store that was on the plaza until the late 60's. Now if they will only put marazzipane on the dollar shelf.
Posted by: AH | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 08:37 PM
I balance my shopping between Aldi's, and the Leawood Hen House. Some things need to be high-end, most things don't.
I remember when the space that is now about at the place Bettar Cheddar is on the Plaza, used to be a pet store. I think this is why I now have a blue and gold macaw. There is one there, that I bonded with. But I knew I couldn't afford to buy it, so I just stopped going in to the store.
Then there was House of Toy. Anybody remember that place? Forget Bo Ling's!
Plus Saks Fifth Avenue used to be a five and dime. And there was a Baskin Robbins, and a grocery, and a Bruce Smith drugstore. The Plaza used to be just another neighborhood, with apartments housed retirees and college kids next to one another.
Now it's all high end stores and high-priced condos. I'm not sure anything has improved much. Except maybe the crime rate. Not that anyone would know about that.
Posted by: Patty PV | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 08:45 PM
I was down on the Plaza this afternoon. I sort of miss living there, but boy, I sure do like having a parking spot, a home office and a nicer grocery store, too.
Posted by: James Hart | Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 09:11 PM
I thought the 5 & dime was the next block over to the west. The gourmet store was in one of the spaces next to Jack Henry in the bottom of plaza time building.
If your hen house is similar to ours it has a section of dollar foods. Of the ones I have seen the selection at the Pricechopper at 80? and Barry road is the best. They have about 3 or 4 short isles with a mix of all kinds of food. Have not tried them yet but have about 5-6 kinds of fruit in glass jars that remind me of branied fruit. No brandy in the jars but I could add my own.

I can't believe it's almost fall. For me, the first of September -- it's my personal start of fall. I'm looking forward to eating chili on a regular basis again. Can't really do that during the summer.

Patty, I didn't think you were that old...
Old days: Plaza stores were mostly local, not chains. I remember the old House of Toy well, and Houlihan's before it was Houlihan's Old Place. Escargot...I MISS THOSE. Sears automotive where Penguin Court stores are now. I had two old maid aunts who lived on the Plaza, one of whom didn't drive. But there was a grocery store and a drug store, and she got on fine.

All sentences are about a little something or another person. The a little something or anyone that the sentence is about is called the topic on the sentence. From your blog, I see that, and study a thing I'd like. Thanks for sharing.
