UPDATE: Bystander shoots woman accused of shoplifting meat, police say

Shoplift

Robbery_tag

We've got a mugshot of the alleged meat shoplifter, Loucinda M. Carroll, who's been charged with second-degree robbery. For those coming in late, Independence police say she tried to steal a bag of meat from a Sun Fresh this weekend.

As she allegedly attempted her getaway, the store manager got hit, landed on her hood and held on. And a bystander with a CCW permit, who tried to block the woman with his vehicle, ended up shooting her because he thought his life was in danger, authorities say. The CCW guy will NOT be charged.

I bet aqua would have donated some free meat.

I know it's not right, but I do feel a wee bit sorry for the gal. It wasn't like she was pistol whipping some poor little cashier for drug money. She was just trying to put a little food on the table and things went WAY wrong.

Okay, shooting a shoplifter may be excessive, but don't feel too sorry for her. There are ways to get food other than committing a crime.

She'll get food from all the money the guy will have to pay her when she sues him.

Does anyone really want some gunhappy clown deciding to hold a shootout in a grocery parking lot over a shoplifting?

On what planet does that make us safer?

KC Cicero,

Catch up, you're way behind.

Read the articles about it.

It STOPPED being about shoplifting when the shoplifter used her car for attempted homicide by trying to run over the store manager, who was trying to write down her car's license number.

That's when the not-so-gunhappy clown decided, "If I do nothing, like most people would do in this situation, the store manager might be killed."

Actually, I was well aware of the reported facts. Yes, the manager running out in front of a fleeing car was also dumb. I'll bet his wife thinks so. And yes, running him down was inexcusable and criminal.

None of that means that the decision to hold a gunfight in the parking lot made ANY sense at all. This is exactly what is wrong with our CCW laws. Unless this guy is Annie Oakley, shooting at a moving car is as likely to hurt the manager or an innocent bystander as the criminal. He got "lucky" in that he did not kill someone, but "lucky" does NOT equal smart.

Well, I disagree.

The police weren't there.

Despite the manager's (I agree) poor decision to run in front of the car, the fact remains, had this guy not acted, there is a good possibility the manager would have fallen off the fleeing car and hit their head, potentially causing serious harm or death (happened to a kid I went to high school with, so don't say that's unlikely) or fell off the front of the hood to be run over by said perpetrator.

I completely disagree with your opinion that CCW laws are potentially dangerous to the general public, since the evidence after many years of lawful CCW carry in nearly every state in the USA shows no such happenstance.

I love all the antis crying foul here. Oh my gosh, someone stole some meat and now they ran down the manager. Lets hide in case someone might want to stop her and save the managers life. I'm so afraid. Well, if you're so afraid you need to stay home. The problem with that is that you can always be a victim of a home invasion robbery.
And for those that think the fine citizen who put a stop to this will get sued he probably will but I doubt he will lose.
She didn't deserve to be shot until she took it upon herself to use her car as a deadly weapon in the getaway. It's the same as if she was shooting her way out.
Stray bullets?? How about a speeding car in a parking lot running over a shopper or a child that wandered into her path?
Are you so blind to your anti stance you cannot use common sense anymore. The CCW holder wasn't wildly shooting, he took a safe shot and I'll bet he knew what was in the background before pulling the trigger. That's what CCW holders are taught during their training.
