The Los Angeles Times has a feature about four siblings who lost their mother and grandmother to gang violence and almost saw their father murdered. Their aunt, basically, decided to exile them from South L.A., where they'd grown up, because she was afraid of what might happen to them. It's a little long, but a good read, regardless.
