In Colorado Springs, a soldier based at Fort Carson said that he'd stopped to help a stranded motorist when that person shot him in the shoulder. But police say the soldier actually shot himself so that he could get out of an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

He should have aimed a little higher.

Never point your gun at anything you don't want to....wait...never mind.

This is a court martial offense of damaging or destroying goverment property at the very least. His troubles have just started.

People are shooting themselves to get out of, and as an effect of the Afghanistan/Iraq wars. While we sit back drink a coke and repeat to each other how it's not that bad.

Sounds like a good canidate for future law enforcement.

This is almost as bad as the Army officer in GA refusing to be deployed because he wants Obama to prove his U.S. citizenship by birth. Both are cowards...not because they do not want to deploy but because they are letting their buddies down.

I wouldn't want to be deployed in wartime with this coward. When someone shows you who they really are, believe them - the first time.

"I wouldn't want to be deployed in wartime with this coward."
Exactly. Picking an choosing going to war on his terms is like saying I'd like a pound of Patriotism please. I only need a pound because I'm only a part time patriot.

This is not the first time this has happened. I remember back during Gulf War I with Bush the Older, there was a woman doctor who refused to go because she was anti-violence or something.
She thought that since the US had not been at war for a while, she could do her hitch and have the US government pay for her to be trained as a DOCTOR.
Then the US had to audicity to make her live up to her committment. And she could not understand why the US people did not back her!!
My comment back then was, she should have to repay the US government for her education. Period, end of sentence.

The Golfer -
You are thinking of Dr. Yolanda Huet-Vaughn. She ended up serving several (13 I think) years in military prison, forfeited all pay, rank, and benefits, and yes, she did have to repay the government for her education.
There was another more recent case however of someone shooting himself so he did not have to re-deploy to Iraq. I don't recall how that one turned out.

Remember that President who never bothered showing up for Guard duty?
Posted by: Marvin | Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 03:34 PM
Marvin, what does that have to do with anything? Remember the president who never served because he's a pansy? Remember the president that condemed his own comrades?

Self-inflicted wounds to get out of dangerous military service is nothing new. Been going on since there have been soldiers.
Posted by: Elrond of Rivendell | Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 04:27 PM
Marvin,
What's your point. At least he served!
Remember that TV news guy for 60 minutes who used false information about that same President's military record?

We had the same problems in the Viet Nam war. Heck we had 2 guys 69 each other in their rack just to get kicked out. Couldn't handle it.
I like to be a fly on the wall at those two reunion. "So, you want to reminisce about the good ole days? Yea, but can we stop just before the bed scene?" LOL

146,
Pretty soon, that'll be the norm.
Elrond,
Who cares about the fake docs. He still never showed up and we know that as a fact. Yet somehow, he was the hero and the guy who volunteered for frontline duty is the coward.
Posted by: Marvin | Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 05:50 PM
I've seen a lot of guys fake injuries, illness, and family emergency to get out of deployments. Thankfully, I never saw two dudes slobbering on each others junk to get out of their duty, but then again its not like Desert storm and Somalia were anywhere near as chancy as Vietnam was.

Yes, clearly the guy was a coward who was afraid of gunfire. No wait ...
