In Wilmington, Del., the Catholic diocese has filed for Chapter 11, but they say they're going to keep paying retirement benefits to six former priests who are confirmed pedophiles. They say they still have an obligation to the men.

We know what they're obligated to.

The men already broke their obligations to the church.
contract is null and void.
this church is null void of common sense.

No more an obligation than they have to the creditors they are trying to discharge. If they are so worried about their obligations then they should suck it up and pay their debts.

I suspect that the priests are not covered by Social Security.

The 'creditors' they are trying to discharge include the victims of these pedophiles.

We have taxpayer-funded institutions to take care of pedophile priests, well past retirement. They are called prisons.

Only issue with that parkay is that the abused would have to give up their multi million dollar settlements.

Another instance of hypocrisy and Catholics...

This is the most rational statement parkay has ever made about any subject. I applaud and concur with parkay's suggestion.

Chuck Rizzo -
Just because someone is found guilty of a criminal act does not preclude a victim from recovering via civil suit. Additionally, the reason the abused have received the damages they have received in these cases is because the Roman Catholic Church, in the United States and abroad acted for decades as a criminally corrupt organization hiding where possible, threatening where it was effective, bribing where necessary, and shuttling rapists and sexual abusers of children and parishioners to new congregations and victims.
Place the blame on the correct party here. It is not the victims' fault they were victimized. It is not the juries' fault that the Roman Catholic Church decided to engage in this heinous pattern of behavior and criminal conspiracy. It is the fault of these venal villains and their enabling cohorts in the church hierarchy. So exactly how much would you sell your children's innocence for? What do you think is a fair price for being raped by a trusted, suppposedly spiritual leader? Because in suggesting or arguing that the damages in these cases were excessive, you are begging that exact question.
