Dog breeders challenge "puppy mill" petition

The Humane Society and other animal activists are circulating a petition for a "puppy mill" ballot initiative. If passed, the measure would require large-scale dog breeders to provide their animals with adequate food, water, rest and room. It would also cap the number of dogs they could own at 50, and it would create a crime of "puppy mill cruelty."

The Missouri Federation of Animal Owners is challenging the initiative in court because of the term "puppy mill," saying that it's prejudicial and shouldn't be in the ballot language. (Sort of like having a "Be Nice to Orphaned Children Act" -- who's going to vote against that?)

" dog breeders to provide their animals with adequate food, water, rest and room"

These things are already required by law...almost everything in this "waste of time and money", bill is already on the books.

And looky here: The backer of this bill Humane Society of the US is getting his with a Federal Racketeering Lawsuit

"saying that it's prejudicial and shouldn't be in the ballot language."

Criminals don't like it when you call them criminals.

This is something that needs to happen. The Midwest is ripe for puppy mills and they push a lot of badly bred dogs out to people.

Where's Tom K at?

Hell hath no fury like a logic-resistant, one-track poster.

They don't push these dogs out people want them - people buying these dogs are as much to blame.

BS proves the point that the ballot language is inflamatory.

No, this doesn't need to happen. Read the bill - almost everything is already on the books. Even the people pushing this admit its and ENFORCMENT issue. There are 13 inspectors for the entire state and even licensed facilities are not getting inspected on schedule. They estimate 1500 UNLICENSED breeders - they could be shut down tomorrow if they had the people to do it. This bill will do nothing but create more red tape, costing more money, leading to fewer facilities getting inspected and more horrific situations.

If you are set on buying a puppy please download and read, “How To Buy A Puppy” before you consider parting with your money. It is free at howtobuyapuppy.net

Buying a puppy without problems is harder than most people think. Finding a responsible and knowledgeable breeder is very difficult.

Most vets can recommend breeders that are humane and care enormously for the animals they breed. Call some vets in your area. You will need to have a vet anyway once you get a pet.

The Non profitables. Love the Term Puppy Mill. Because it makes them millions of dollars. Why they refuse to legally define the term. Why should a state lay down and make a law against something with no legal definition? Because simply Defining the term Puppy Mill would end all Puppy Mills. Loosely defining Puppy Mill keeps the urban legions rolling. Call the HSUS Washington DC and ask them to send you the legal definition. Ask Robin Carnahan to send you the legal defintion!!!!

ALSO all shelters and rescues should be forced to follow the same laws as those they want to impose on all breeders. The law determines all breeders in Missouri with more then 10 dogs a large scale puppy mill.
