How "The Dating Game" figures into a murder trial

Alcala

In Santa Ana, Calif., a man named Rodney Alcala, 66, is on trial for the 1979 slaying of a 12-year-old girl. (He's also suspected of a handful of other murders.) Alcala, who has an IQ near 160 or 170 and is representing himself, plans to show 10 minutes from an old "Dating Game" episode that features him as Bachelor No. 1. (He won, by the way.)

Alcala says he wants to show the video to prove he was wearing gold ball earings, contradicting the mother of one of his alleged victims who says an earing found in Alcala's possession after he was arrested belonged to her daughter.

This is the third time Alcala has stood trial for the slaying. His previous convictions were overturned.
