A Florida woman named Samantha Lynn Frazier was shot and injured as she tried to enter a bar in Atlantic City. The shot hit her in her love handle, which, she says, saved her life.
"I don't want to lose weight anymore. I want to be as big as I can if it's going to stop a bullet."

I saw a MythBusters episode dealing with muscle mass stopping a bullet. The conclusion of their testing was that it wasn't possible to have a large enough muscle (arm, glute or other) that it would stop a .38 bullet. I would think fat would be even less resistance than muscle.
Go ahead and get fat, Ma'am. It will improve your chances of dying from heart disease, diabetes, or a bad fall before you are shot to death.
