The Mansfield, Ohio, man is now facing cruelty charges. He'd called the police because he was afraid he'd been burglarized, and that's how the police learned about his ice menagerie, authorities say. His explanation: He was waiting for spring to bury the animals.

It appears from the story that the man was not present at the scene when police arrived. So I'm wondering how the police got around to looking in the freezer when they were there to investigate a burglary call. Maybe they were checking to see if anyone had burglarized the man's ice cubes? Or, if it was one of those large stand-alone freezers, I suppose someone could have been hiding in it (although, wouldn't you suffocate in a matter of minutes?).
